Looking at ratios of the Pontiac GTO (VZ Monaro) as a comparison to the Supra in terms of torque and weight It had a first gear ratio of 2.66/1 with an identical 3.46/1 ratio diff. The second gear in the Supra is 2.315/1 so slightly taller than the VZ Monaro/GTOs 1st gear. The Supra is slightly lighter and certainly has a bit more low rpm torque than the Gen111 Chev engine. So for those unhappy with the 1st to second change when stoplight racing have you considered launching the car in 2nd gear? Not sure how the clutch would handle it or a sidestep might get the rear spinning with the TC off and solve the clutch slip problem. I'm not into stoplight racing or drags but next time I drive my car I'll see how it handles a 2nd gear start clutch slip wise. Cavet, I like a tall first gear in my cars and bikes and will always go the Close ration option if I have a choice. I've stripped down brand new bike engines just to fit close ratio gearboxes a few times so I am biased.
Truth is achieving maximum straight line performance in manuals esp in larger/heavier cars is a pretty brutal affair with regards to the drive line, more specifically getting it launched and into second gear. Even when you get a clean shift into second there's a ton of shock transmitted through the driveline. Maximum performance in a straight line for a manual is not for the mechanically sympathetic that's for sure. The advantage of the Auto.
