Hello,
I have a 2020 LE, stock right now and just had some questions about modding. After looking online quite a bit and trying to figure out what I could, I went ahead and ordered the CTS catless dp which is on the way. As far as I know right now, the car is locked. It went through the recall business before I was able to take hold of it so I'm 99% sure it's locked for tuning. I fully intend to unlock it and do either the bm3 or whichever remote tune is best but for now I was hoping to get some input from anybody who has been in a similar spot...I'm aware that I will very likely get a CEL at the least. What I'm not certain of is whether it will go into so-called "limp mode" at any particular moment following install of the DP without a tune. I was hoping to find out if anyone else has installed this DP or another catless on an non-tuned A90 and what their experience/s may have been with CEL and/or any power issues to see if it would be worth installing now to start off or wait until I can do the unlock and tune (I don't have a backup car so I can't really afford to be without a vehicle for days to wait for an ecu to go out and return).

I've been running catless for a year with no tune and multiple track days.
No limp mode or issues

You don't need a tune to install any car part. Plenty of people are not tuned because of their ECU but have full bolt on. If you did more research before pulling the trigger then you could have bought the Armytrix or Kenji downpipe for a catless option that won't throw CEL.

Since you have a 2020LE all of them are made in 2019 so you're clear to tune without having to send out your ECU. You'll only need a bench unlock.

Since you're new, call every tune shop near you and ask for a quote on an DME bench unlock. Some places will overcharge you, while others won't, I paid $200 for an unlock while other places quoted nearly $500. I paid $90 for an MHD orange dongle, and $450 for a MHD tune.

When picking your route of BM3 or MHD (there are others but really specific usages) make sure you pick up a OBD dongle that supports your tuning platform+bimmercode+xhp (for ex. MHD orange) you'll save $100 down the road not having to buy a different dongle for different apps.

I don't care about the light itself, if it ever does bother me I'll just slap a little sticker over it. My concern was the actual potential power cut as a consequence.
I am still a little thick in trying to understand the whole tune/unlock business with what you're mentioning now about it being unlocked already since I had come across other threads saying that yes the 2020s came unlocked but if they went for a recall it would end up locked.
Sadly here where I'm located there isn't too many places that tune so I'll just have to expand my search area to try and find a place that can give me some more info/costs. Thanks for the info, much appreciated!

You're most likely soft locked because dealership will update the ECU due to recalls so that they're not selling you a car with an active recall open. All you have to do is dme bench unlock the ecu to have tuning access.

ECU dates post mid 2020+ will need to have their ECU unlocked by having it cloned. So they have to pull out their ECU and ship it overseas which can take a week or so. Since launch editions are the first 1500 Supras made, our cars are made in 2019 and sold to the public in 2020. So we are good. You can confirm your production take by pulling your ECU out or open the door there should be a sticker with your production date

As for tuning places, I was surprised how many shops nearby there were for me when I thought I had to travel far to find one. Just Google 'tuning shops near me' or 'bmw tuning near me' or even call dyno shops cause they'll also be tuning shops. The unlock takes about 10-20 minutes tops.

So the closest shop for a bench unlock I have come across is a 2+ hour drive for me and now I'm really considering any potential alternatives. Ive heard of Visconti tuning that supposedly can even do it remotely. Any other companies out there someone might suggest for remote unlock or I guess places to send in if it can be done in a one day turn around time?
