That dude is a jackass the more I read about him. Now he says the next rendition of the GT86 will be better to drive than the Supra. Toyota's Halo sports car is already obsolete according to this guy if he's spewing that kind of nonsense.

Just lost in translation, that wasn’t really the message he wanted to make

Any engineer always wants their next project to be better than the last. Better =/= more capable, better =/= meeting scope of project

I would expect the 86.2 to be 'better' than an A90, but completely different design intent.

If you actually got the context, he mean his goals for the next 86 would be to be better than the supra... IN TERMS OF HANDLING. All these clickbait articles took him out of context.

That's not how a halo car for a company works.

How would Nissan's halo car, the GTR, look if important figure heads in Nissan were publicly talking about how the next Z will be better than the current GTR. Toyota unfortunately doesn't have the legacy in the supra that Nissan has in the GTR but still, comments like having the next 86 be better than the supra in any performance category reduces what the supra name was and should mean. The mk5 literally just came out!

The supra was/is Toyota's halo car and if they don't treat it as such, they should just let the name fully die out after this mk5.

The translation may have been off and Tada might not have said exactly what is being reported but honestly, he shouldn't be placing himself in positions where he could be misconstrued. Simply saying the next generation 86 will be better than the current 86 is all that's needed. No need to answer to supra comparisons.

"The Supra has only barely started shipping to dealers and finding buyers, but it sounds like the automaker may already be well underway with work on a new 86.

That is, if you take comments from Supra chief engineer Tetsuya Tada at face value. The main man behind the reborn Supra told Australian publication that the next-generation 86 will be an even better car to drive than the Supra. Unlike other previous 86 rumors, the publication has two quotes on the record about the next-generation sports car, which also doubles as the .

Tada reportedly said there is, in fact, "'a new 86 [development] team,'" which indicates work is underway on a followup to the affordable, no-frills sports car. He also told the publication that the "'customer expects'" the team will create a new 86 that's better than the Supra. Local representatives told the publication a development team does not necessarily mean there will be another generation, however.

It's sort of strange to undercut a brand's banner sports car with such a comment, but nevertheless, Tada indicates there's a high bar for the next sports car. Toyota did not confirm Tada's comments but a representative told Roadshow, "'As [Toyota CEO] Akio Toyoda said at the , Toyota is committed to building exciting vehicles, including sports cars. The 86 has been in the Toyota family since 2013 and the plan is that it will continue to be a part of Toyota's sports car lineup.'"

Either way, Tada isn't working on 86 gen 2 as far as im aware, and has actually been on a contract (he retired) since around the beginning of the A90 development. He was to complete that platform and teach as many of the junior engineers about his tenure at Toyota before passing on the torch. I'm sure he will stay involved through the A90 update cycle, but after that he will likely fully retire if he doesn't pick up a contract somewhere else.

So, he really shouldn't be commenting on the new 86 anyways IMO.
