@Eastwood might be on to something here. doing this can cause serious injury. on a low impact accident a single stage airbag might deploy with too much force or worse not deploy at all. so now NEW question! can someone retro fit dual stage airbag onto the g80 wheel so it'll work on our cars

You CAN and SHOULD get a dual stage airbag with a g80 conversion wheel. I have one. The problem is people cheap out and end up with a wheel company that doesnt know the difference or doesnt care. Thats why i always use Phillip (Leather Werks Auto) because they stand behind thier supplier and get you things properly.

The seller said that they sent me the wrong airbag since in some regions Supra does come with single stage airbags from factory.. so I would assume that they do have the dual stage airbags. Just need to specify that when ordering.

They should 100% send you the right airbag.

BTW this explanation is misleading. SIngle stage means no control over the speed of extend of airbag explosion. Dual stage means there is a small motor/sensor that controls how far the airbag should go when deployed. Both airbag was used in BMWs, only newer and higher-end models have dual stage. European car with stricter safety regulation uses single stage to prevent malfunctioning of dual stage sensor/motors.

Single stage airbags go off at a present speed and power. Dual stage airbags go off at different presets according to the load sensor on the front seat, so for a really light driver or passenger the airbag will inflate at a slightly slower force so as NOT to injure a smaller occupant.

Both will employ the sensor in the seat so that if no occupant in front passenger seat, the airbag will not inflate.

When he said near your thumbs, he was talking about the 2nd sensor that makes it dual stage. Here’s a picture of it….
