Looking at the teasers, it’s clear the new concept is an evolution of the XR-PHEV concept that we first saw at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. Like the XR-PHEV, the new concept for Geneva is likely a preview of the next-generation Outlander Sport.

Why the interest in a concept that likely previews a new Outlander Sport? Because Mitsubishi has also shown us a version of the previous XR-PHEV with the Evolution name tagged on, and this performance-oriented crossover concept, complete with S-AWC all-wheel drive, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and plug-in hybrid power, may just be a preview of the car that will eventually succeed the Lancer Evolution which bows out of the market this year.

We should have more details soon as the Geneva Motor Show will be getting underway on March 3. To see what else will be at the Swiss show, head to our dedicated hub.

In related news, Mitsubishi is expected to use February’s Chicago Auto Show to debut a new model, tipped to be a new generation of the Montero. Our sister siteThe Car Connection has more details.
