"We, of course, don’t know how much it will cost but the likelihood is that if you look at the Porsche Cayman GTS’ circa €95,000 figure then you’ll probably not be too far out."

Cliff notes: It`s fast, drives great, we don`t have any numbers yet.

So good is the new Supra!
The Toyota Supra comes back: With straight-six and rear-wheel drive. How To Cars is the fifth generation of the Supra already driven! Plus all information!

Presentation: Market launch in the second half of 2019

The one who? What is the correct name? Here comes the official answer: the Toyota Supra ! But the Japanese reveal that the Supra is okay too. More importantly, the Japanese sports coupe is finally back. Well, as good as back!

Short review: 2002 was the last Toyota Supra off the line, but the official EU import was discontinued in 1996 - that is 22 years ago. In 2012 it was decided to reissue the sports car icon in cooperation with BMW. In early 2014, the spectacular FT-1 study was unveiled - and from then on, the wait began to show the racing version at the Geneva Motor Show in 2018 , with a pre-production model making the first public rounds at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The market launch should finally take place in the second half of 2019 .

Supra No. 5 was under the label Gazoo Racingplanned and developed. In bundlemotorsport activities , but also sports modelslike the Yaris GRMN chief developer Tetsuya Tada , the core ingredients were clear: front engine ( straight-six ) and rear-wheel drive . Toyota does not want to reveal the exact performance yet. Only so much: over 300 hp . More important than the numbers is the driving pleasure , so Tada. Special emphasis was placed on the relationship between track widthfuturenot only does Toyota want all of them to offer, The next candidate is the new Supra. According to and wheelbase laid.

The Toyota Supra is more expensive than the GT86
To understand the Supra, the market positioning is particularly important: the sports car is offered clearly above the purist Toyota GT86. Only at the beginning of 2019 will Generation Five finally appear undisguised. Since the US is the largest market ahead of Europe, How To Cars tints on a presentation at the Detroit Auto Show (NAIAS) 2019 . The start of the order is already in October 2018. For 2019, 900 copies are planned for Europe , all of which are ordered / reserved online via the so-called "Supra 900 Club". A price call the Japanese not yet - How To Cars expects at least 46,000 euros in the base. At a later date, four-cylinder versions are planned. Even oneTarga version is not excluded.

Interior: Full load BMW in the cockpit
The Supra is still camouflaged outside and inside. But Toyota promises that the sports car, which is created in cooperation with BMW, corresponds to the slide of the series. When getting in there is the first surprise: Hello, BMW ! Despite curtains, adhesive tape and seat covers, cooperation with the people of Munich is visible. Climate control, iDrive controller, steering wheel including cruise control, even the door pins come one to one from BMW. Minus point? On the contrary - I like it! The processing is very good - and in a pre-production car! In addition, there are proprietary design solutions such as the instruments , the semi-digital and half analog with a central tachometer come up.

Another advantage for the Supra: the variety of colors! With the doors open, many colorful colors can be recognized. The four Supra test vehicles were red, dark blue, dull gray and yellow. Please take this color palette into the series, Toyota.
We come to the interior feeling - which is very neat for a relatively compact sports car (under 4.40 meters in length and thus significantly shorter than the design study FT-1). With 1.83 meters height I have enough space. In the Toyota Supra, it will be tight at only 1.90 meters. The seating position is neatly deep and the steering wheel can be adjusted in height and depth - so a good seating position is found quickly. The only criticism in the camouflaged interior: On the racetrack, the seats offer too little lateral support. I also noticed a funny detail: the warning sound, for example when the belt is not worn, is the typical BMW beep.

Driving: The Toyota Supra is nicely tuned

How To Cars is allowed to turn on the 1967 built Circuito del Jarama near Madrid several rounds in the Vorserienautp. Start button press - and the supercharged straight-six sounds very reserved. Let's start in normal mode. As soon as you get to know the 3.4-kilometer-long race track it becomes clear that the Reihensechser pushes neatly under 3000 rpm. So switch to sports mode . Immediately, the Supra gets two, three levels louder, the throttle response becomes much more direct, and the active dampers are firmer.

Drift? No problem!

After just a few bends, it is noticeable that the Supra is tuned extremely good-naturedly. That's both because of the perfect 50:50 weight distribution as well as the extremely low center of gravity (lower than the GT86) and the ratio of track width to wheelbase . The steering behavior is particularly well achieved by the engineers, understeer is a foreign word despite the front engine. Here, the extensive fine work on chassis and chassis pays off. And for all drift friends, it should be said that the ESP completely switches off. Thanks to the active limited slip differential , transverse travel is no problem.

On the racetrack, the Toyota beats more than neat, but the Japanese reveal that it was designed and tuned mainly on public roads - just where customers drive 90 percent. So it's about Spanish country and mountain roads. Change from sports mode to normal mode and the coupe is despite 19-inch vehicle sufficiently comfortable, the eight-speed automatic switches early and the just still robust six-cylinder sound is clearly in the background.

Design: A bit of FT1, a bit of Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato
Despite the camouflage, it can be seen that the production version takes on some of the design features of the beautiful FT-1 study . However, it should not be forgotten that the Supra is much more compact than the Concept 2014. It's not just about the overall length, but especially about the wheelbase and the gauge. One of the developers revealed that it was a real challenge for the designers to tailor the body over the narrow platform. As far as I can judge despite camouflage, but this is more than successful.

Above all, the tail with the rump and the central Supra lettering is well done, reminiscent of obliquebehind the beautiful Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato. And besides, for my taste too long front overhang is not noticeable.

Engine and technology: Further engines and versions are to follow
At this time, there is not much to say about the engines . The fact is that the Supra comes to market launch with a straight-six to the market. Exact performance data does not exist yet - How To Cars assumes that Toyota puts on the engine of the platform brother BMW Z4 M40i . In the Roadster makes the three-liter six-cylinder 340 hp . 0-100 km / h are done after 4.6 seconds - these values also seem realistic for the Toyota Supra. With this engine Toyota sets exclusively on an eight-speed automatic transmission . On a dual-clutch gearbox, the Japanese deliberately omitted - on a manual transmission also.

At least for now, because a manual transmission is quite conceivable, but would have to be redeveloped. The circuit from the smaller and significantly weaker GT86 is overwhelmed with the maximum torque of the single-turbo engine. In addition, chief developer Tetsuya Tada insists that should any manual transmission be offered, this one is also extremely crisp.
Higher body stiffness than a Lexus LFA
The chief developer does not do things by halves anyway. This is the only way to explain that the new one Supra a lower center of gravity than that conceptually favored by the boxer engine GT86 and a higher body stiffness than the super sports car Lexus LFA , whose chassis is made for the most part of carbon.
In addition, Tada reveals that the board would have liked that the sports coupe as a hybridat the start. Thereupon, the team experimented a lot with such experimental vehicles, but no matter where the batteries were housed, the ratio between track and wheelbase and thus the driving pleasure would have suffered. After all, he does not exclude that still different motorizations and a manual transmission could come in the course of the model cycle. A personal highlight would be a slimmed-down supra with borrowings from the Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept .

All of the notes are speculated and also are the euro spec and even now, seems that they have lots more to come

How does "circa €95,000" for the Cayman GTS work out? That translates to $110k and the Cayman GTS starts at $80,700 here in the U.S.
Speculation because pricing, performance, weoght and what not was not revealed.

That article mentioned that Tada or one of the engineers stated the interior was bespoke? From what we’ve seen, it’s all parts from the BMW bin. Is it possible to pull a switcheroo like that, this late into development?

I think some of the parts that we see on the prototype like mirrors, shifter, and iDrive dial are just place holders.

What an awful review... Doesn't really tell us nothing we don't know... 900 club, is Toyota really expecting to sell 900 cars in October without announcing final specs and pricing? They won't have a problem I suspect but it's a stupid move I think... And that is what will happen on october 2nd

"The Supra will eventually get a system that amplifies engine noises through the stereo (in part so that it can get around strict new drive-by noise rules)"
