Hey Fellas,
I am in search of some advice ordering a new A90 Manual Premium in Connecticut. I've never bought a brand new car before, let alone ordered one, however it seems that there is much more to it for something like the A90 than I had anticipated i.e. you can't just order one of these nor can you build one exactly how you want it.
I currently have a deposit/order in with Colonial Toyota in Milford at 3k markup on MSRP. They said they "located a car within 300 miles that is close to what I'm looking for" (Absolute zero, Manual, Premium, Black Leather + Carbon Mirror caps that I don't care about but whatever) and that the time to get it may take up to 12 months though they are fairly confident they can get it sooner. This is the only dealer I've spoken to so far that says they are very confident given their dealership size and order volume that they will be able to fulfill this order for me hence why I gave deposit though reluctant with the 3k markup but I'll explain more below.
I have called about 12 dealerships throughout CT and here is what happens:
Majority tell me there won't be a markup on MSRP but when trying to move forward they eventually turn me down because they don't think they can get me a car within what I feel is a generous 14 months time frame. Majority say they barely get allocations for Supras, some say they've never had them. One dealer said they've had two orders still open from 2021 with no end in sight.
Middletown Toyota, who has had a couple Supras previously, was going to take the order with a 2k non-refundable deposit and no markup. After starting the process and giving them the spec I was looking for they came back after 3 days of back and forth and told me they will not take the order and will contact me if they can get an order for one.
Two dealers, Crab Tree Toyota of Watertown (2k Markup) and Toyota of Wallingford (5k markup) were the only ones aside from Milford Toyota that were eager to take a deposit, however it almost seemed too eager and left me apprehensive. I just want assurance that whichever dealer I go through will eventually be able to deliver my order.
My fear is that I commit to a dealer then after 14 months goes by I get told my order will not be able to be filled and I am left wasted all that time.
I've seen folks here place orders at MSRP and get them filled. Am I missing something when trying to order one of these cars?
Should I believe what Milford Toyota has told me and sit back until I get the call or should I put in another order elsewhere at say Watertown with the 2k markup and see who delivers first?
Lastly, does anyone have a dealership they'd recommend in this state or out of state that I should go to for this? I called a couple out of state dealerships but they told me they wouldn't sell a premium car like this to an out of state person (bangs head on wall)
I think manual sports cars are kind of done at this point. I wasn't in a financial position when I was younger to grab a MK4 before the prices sky rocketed. The MK5 is a very pretty car and checks a lot of the must have boxes in a proper sports car so I want to try to grab one before they to inevitably skyrocket in price. I'd prefer to purchase brand new to have a clean slate and not have to deal with any previous ownership woes, especially for something like this as I don't see there being any newer desirable manual sports cars in the near future and not at this price-point.
Thank you so much in advance!
Cheers,
Quinn
