There's no issues with water getting in because of the channels you mentioned. They basically act as drain channels to get the water out. Even with the stock closed vents, water gets in behind them.

I wonder if this is actually hurting the drag, thus speed and MPG...
That air, unless you guys have a duct, is getting stuck under the headlight area, wheel well area... and if you ask me not doing you guys any favor. my 2 cents.
I do have anecdotal experience that even if they do increase drag/hurt performance it's not enough to matter. Did a track day with the front vents stock on the 2nd session of the day, and with the new/open ones on in the third session. The car felt the same, I ran the exact same times and my data logs were also pretty much the same (within a reasonable variability). So probably not enough of a difference to have any real world effect.
