Picking up new Supra - is this just a bit bizarre or worrisome?

New 2025 Supra arrived at dealership earlier this week, approx. 6 weeks after I placed a deposit (The delivery dates had changed 3 different times, so I am eager to finally get it of course). I was scheduled to pick it up today but the salesman called yesterday and cancelled because the "BMW trained Supra mechanic" went home sick before he could complete the hours long setup that only he could do. So I planned for next week and then he just called back saying the sick trained mechanic just helped another mechanic over the phone to do the setup, so now I can come get it tomorrow.

So ... for anyone who knows this process:

Is the initial set-up really a hours long process?? Or is this some weird BS??

If it is that complicated, should I be worried that an untrained technician did most of it following phone directions?

The dealership is 3 1/2 hours away, so taking a quick trip back to get anything corrected is not possible and I doubt a local dealership closer to me would be happy about dealing with another place's screwup. Its not giving the warm fuzzy new car feeling right now LOL

Any thoughts/info appreciated.

Make sure you have them confirm that the navigation is working Before you head over there. That’s the biggest issue I think with PDI besides shipping spacers/blocks being left in.

NAVIGATION NAVIGATION NAVIGATION!

Don't just ask them, go to the car and access it and attempt to use it.

If it doesn't work, come back when it does. It was a colossal waste of time for a lot of us here that had that exact process skipped in PDI.

Also, having one trained BMW mechanic and having your time revolve around their schedule is normal for these cars, unfortunately yes.

Yes It took all day for mine. Dealer called at 8 am I showed at the dealer at 11 am I watched them pull it in for update and prep just before noon and left the deal at 5pm. I talked to the mechanic that did the service, He was frazzled and apologetic for it taking so long.

I took a used Supra to Toyota for a PPI and they found the shipping spacers still attached to the shocks - they were in great shape! Car was never cornered hard. ;) haha

Remember that for all practical purposes this is a BMW with settings, values, measurements, electronics and things like lug bolts are sized for a BMW and not a Toyota. So a technician trained specifically for the Supra is required.

And once you own it, find a LOCAL BMW independent shop.
Essentially EVERYTHING mechanical - engine, driveline, suspension, cooling is BMW.
With many parts shared across the 2-3-4 series cars.

And get to know the local BMW guys. Super amazing people who know their stuff and have pretty low egos.

LOL, I picked up my car yesterday, and no nav! Glad to read that I'm not the only one.

Natch the one guy that could do it wasn't working on Saturday.

This, this, this. My navigation wasn't working when I showed up so I waited an hour or two and made sure the tech had it working before I drove off the lot. Haven't been back since lol.

You're gonna love the car!
