first time post - 2023 manual supra - mostly stock (no exhaust or downpipe)

i have been recently playing with a JB4 + E20 and I noticed the engine sound change. i tried recording it but its not significant enough to hear on a video.
-only under WOT acceleration.
-engine performance not really affected, but possibly some performance drop, hard to tell, no warning on dash.
-i went back to Map 0 - and still the same
-sounds like a boost leak, a rush of air rushing out
-Active sound already disabled
-i noticed a new error code - 130716 Vanos solenoid valve exhaust camshaft clamped. cleared the code, still the same.
-charge pipes have been upgraded - maybe a leak here
any help would be appreciated

I unplugged JB4 entirely, cleared codes again, everything is now back to normal...

So one idea, turbo blow off?
Like you nail the gas, then let off and you hear like a pressure valve let go.

130716 will put you in limp mode and basically opens the wastegate to reduce boost. That code can come from maxing out the HPFP.

@razorlab thanks for explaining that - that must be it.
HPFP - sorry noob here, this is maxing out the fuel pump? is that because of the Ethanol, or simply generally asking too much via the JB4?

Honestly it's been issue after issue with the JB4. I think Terry still has some work to do on the firmware for the MT's, I am impatiently waiting for the next firmware update or considering a Femto unlock.

shoutout to @ColonelAdama who was able to get some amazing performance for me with a E20 mix, but firmware issues are a limiting factor.

Yes, can be from maxing out the High Pressure Fuel Pump. That can happen easier in lower RPM when asking for too much boost, combining it with Ethanol can compound it.

How much peak boost are you running?

Not much boost iirc. I don't push MTs too much, especially below 5k since its easy to trip this flag

What was FOL set to on the JB4? Too high will show the fuel pressure as too low, and will cause this. Same with too high of boost targets or ethanol.

Map 0 having the issue sort of indicates charge pipe though. JB4 is completely passthru in Map 0, just logging capabilities.

I should have phrased that better. "too much boost for the current fuel mix, rpm, pump" not too much boost as an absolute.

I'm gonna say what @razorlab is thinking:

If you are already considering FEMTO, just do it lol.

I am gonna go FEMTO too after the car is paid off, warranty mattered to me until I own outright.

You can thank BMW/Toyota for absolutely nerfing the shit out of the injection monitoring on MT cars and I don't see a workaround in sight soon besides a very progressive boost curve and FOL 60-80 only.

I do have quite a few MT cars running E40 that don't even have this issue, so it is definitely perplexing.

the 130716 error is just the tip of the iceberg, the main issues were the constant stuttering, throttle closures, flat spots in the power band, low boost errors, works perfect one day and then a change in the ambient temperature causes the car to drive completely different the next day.

Below is where I left it last, but tried all sort of different boost figures:

Boost:
1500 - 0.8
2000 - 1.3
2500 - 1.8
3000 - 1.8
3500 - 2.8
4000 - 3.8
4500 - 4.5
5000 - 4.5
5500 - 5.9
6000 - 5.9
6500 - 5.0
7000 - 3.8

Duty Bias:
49-52

Map 4 with IAT spoof
Map6 without IAT spoof
PID - 15-25
FF 25-35
FOL 80-120
Autoshift boost redux 0
Bit 1: enabled
Bit 2: enabled

5000 - 4.6
5500 - 5.6
6000 - 5.6

FOL 70, E20, flat 50 duty, FF 30, autoshift 0, v28, bit 1, PID 20, no spoof

That is my current rec if HPFP flags keep getting tripped

my bad, I think I didn't clear the code properly the first time. I think I was supposed to lock the car, go away and come back and restart the car for proper clearing of the code, or something along the lines.

Sounds about JB4.

Thanks @ColonelAdama i'll give it a try with exactly these settings, hopefully that can keep me going until I can budget for Femto
