Hey everyone,

Picked up my 2020 Premium Supra last Friday.

Really only driven it a couple days and put about 300 miles on it so far.

Overall the car is amazing, and I can't stress enough this thread is not me trying to complain. I am just curious if these are normal issues, because the car is so new still that I wasn't expecting it. However today when driving the car I noticed multiple things that concerned me.

First, when the car was at idle in either sport or comfort mode there was a very strange loud ticking/knocking coming from the driver footwell/center tunnel area. After shutting the car off and immediately turning car on sound went away and I did not hear it for the rest of the day. Any one experience this?

Second, I have a weird tick/rattle right by the driver door where the belt is. Doesn't sound like the door lock issue, but I could be mistaken?

Third, in the center tunnel right behind the cup holders there is a tin can rattle at times and is generally prominent when in sport mode. I have a feeling it's an exhaust rattle coming into the cabin, and not sure if this is a normal thing? This doesn't happen often, and I only really heard it when idling. When driving it goes away.

Fourth, my driver seat practically touches the cross bar behind the seat due to my height. I am only 5'9", not that tall. Anyone else have this issue with rubbing or creaking due to seat pushed so far back?

Fifth, when putting the car in “Park” or “Drive” the car makes a weird mechanical creak. The car also seems to squat noticeably when putting into drive. Also the rear brake makes a squeak/creak when putting the car in park as well. Have no idea if this is normal or not. Car functions fine, just makes these noises.

Sixth, and hopefully final thing is the speaker behind the passenger seat rattles due to the bass when music is on. I played with the bass settings and only if I put the bass completely down to lowest negative settings I can guarantee no vibration. I find it weird that the upgraded sound system has issues like this so soon.

Appreciate any feedback.

Cheers,
-V

The only one I have is putting the car in park with the handbrake (not the P button on the stick)

That lowers the car (My son went Wow!) and you do hear a creak as the handbrake applies.

None of the others you have listed have any noise on my car.

However, I have only put 100 miles on her so far.

That is normal. My car does that too. It’s the electronic system engaging.

Mine happens when car is put into drive or park and the car kinda squats and creaks for a second.

The rattle from where the drivers belt area maybe coming from the door pin. I’ve seen a few people mention it. Apparently common in all BMWs.

Can that kind of rattle be easily fixed? If it's common then hopefully there's a solution!

That was my first guess but it sounds like Keshy said that doesn't appear to be it. I'm not sure what else it would be, though, as that's the common complaint I've heard about as well.

Keshy - is the second point different from what the YouTuber is complaining about starting from the 2:43 mark in this video?

They mention that you can just pull back the trip and wrap the door lock in felt or something to prevent plastic from hitting plastic and making that noise. I haven't tried it myself yet but that sounds like a reasonable solution.

Actually I watched this video with headphones on now, and it actually sounds pretty close to what I am hearing. That may actually be that buzzing sound I am hearing.

I'm afraid to pull anything apart since the car is new and mess around with it lol. Maybe if someone has a video walk through that would be awesome.

Hmm well, that's possibly one issue down lol.

Thanks,
-V

Once I pick mine up, I may rip it apart in a similar fashion to what I did on my M car chasing down interior rattles. They're honestly not bad to pull apart. Here's my M4 (original post died, but images are embedded in the thread: LINK

Wow, thank you for those images. Nice and detailed.

So the first image I saw was of the child seat hook or clamp around the speaker? One of my rattles mentioned from the speaker legit has this exact cover/clamp right in front of the speaker box, I wonder if this is what is rattling and not the speaker?

This is my first "BMW" if you will, and I am kind of in aww by how much rattling and fitment issues there are in such a premium vehicle. If these small rattles and such are normal, then I am "okay" with it since it is a sports car. In comfort mode I really don't hear much of it, which is most important. In sport, everything rattles loud due to the exhaust just being so vibrant and loud. I just want to make sure it's all normal.

My 2018 Audi had a couple rattles that were fixed completely from a service bulletin and no issues since.

I am going to document everything on my YouTube channel, but I wanted to discuss here before people think I am blasting the car since it is so new, which is not my intention at all.

Thanks,
-V

That would be awesome - I haven't bothered trying to fix much of the rattling yet but am looking forward to seeing how others address these issues in the Supra (so that I can copy what they do and fix it myself ;-) ).

^^^ Are you saying the parking brake is applied automatically when shifting to Park? Mine doesn't do that but would love that as I have other vehicles that apply automatically in Park.

No, you have to engage the emergency brake separately.

I meant, the sound that is made when engaging the parking brake is normal.

I have put 3000 miles on mine and definitely some issues:

  1. My rear hatch cover is rattling basically all the time.
  2. The seats definitely make contact with the rear hatch cover cross bar. If you put the seat back to comfortably seat someone 6' or above it actually presses against the silver bar going across behind the seats. I'm sure it's terrible on the motors driving it as it makes contact before it stops moving. I keep mine about an inch away from it to prevent excessive wear.
  3. The car should squat a little when engaging drive, that's normal. Once you add some more power you should see it squat even more under acceleration. :drive:
  4. The sound from the subs is probably the worst I've heard in a vehicle in this price range. I think it will need an amp to drive the subs separately but I don't think changing out the subs is necessary. I haven't found any equalizer setting that sounds that great because of the speaker distortion in the subs.

^^^ For the hatch rattle check the rear brake light assembly. Also there is a covered slot in back that would hold a traffic triangle, be sure the lid is closed properly.

Okay,

!!UPDATE!!

I think the rattle that I hear by the belt area might actually be the door lock rattle. However when I hold the door lock and drive as a test I still hear the rattle/whistling sound. Can anyone confirm that the rattle is happening underneath and it is not actually the lock pin on the outside that is visible? It is right by my ear so that's why I think this could be it.

I figured out the terrible bass rattle from the speaker behind the driver. The cover that goes over the chassis, not sure what the proper name is, I guess the gray carpet/mat. Right under that there is some space that is causing the rattle/vibration when the sub/speaker is bumping. When I place my hand/light pressure on that area with max bass not a single peep and the sound quality becomes basically perfect. I think I need to put some kind of dyno mat or felt under there to fill the space. Not sure I am confident enough to tear it down myself right now.

I have an appointment with the dealership tomorrow to have pretty much everything listed checked out. Really the rattles now are not a deal breaker for me. The big thing is the awful creak when putting car in D/P/R initially. If it is completely normal, then fine, but it just seems like such an ugly sound to be made especially at 300 miles. That and the weird rattle/vibration by the driver dead pedal that occurs when at idle, and and only about 10 minutes into the drive and lasts for about five-ten minutes then doesn't happen again until I drive the car next day. I will update everyone if the dealer finds anything.

Thanks,
-V
