My XR does it on any wireless charger, whether in the car or on my Qi one on my desk.
My desk charger doesn’t heat the phone anywhere near as much.

Has anyone taken the plastic cage off yet?

Yes, it pops up and off
Yes. I just removed mine yesterday as well. It's much easier to access the phone without it and I'll probably end up using that space more for storage than charging the phone anyway.

Yes my iPhone X gets so hot it starts acting up and have to take her out of the charging status and it does not charge it much by the time she’s way too hot. I don’t use it I just use the USB port if I need a charge. Puzzling for sure why this is an issue and I have other new vehicles and experience the same thing. I do not feel this is a BMW Toyota specific problem it happens in my Fords and Chevy as well.

wireless charging will always cause a bit more heat than normal wired charging. Also, if you you have a lot of stuff running in the background on the phone while its charging that would also increase the rate of temperature rise. its definitely not just an "issue" with this car.

Someone brought to my attention that Apple started throttling wireless charging in the newest version of iOS. Not sure if it’s due to impact on the hardware or if it’s anticompetitive as some allege.

I was a huge fan up until the 7+. That's when they started ditching features while simultaneously charging more, and then iOS 11 debacle sealed the deal for me.

Thankfully, Android has been pretty decent since 7/8 and has only improved year over year since.

Next year's iPhone is supposed to be pretty cool though according to rumors: 120hz pro-motion display, USB-C, and no notch on the Pro Max. Shame Touch ID was pushed back to 2021.

I had the orange lamp on my s10e Samsung the other day and examined the area more closely today. Noticed about half an inch free space.

I realised that day it was too far left face up.

So today I place it to the right face up and the phone is charging great and no issues or orange lamp.

Hope this helps others.

Happy days.

My phone flies out of the charger if I accelerate too hard.

Anyone know how to stop this?

lol, drive slowly :p
If you still have the cover around the charger, you can try to install some foam on the inside to keep it from moving. and place a usb or something on the usb slot (albeit if too hard, can break the usb and the slot)...
