The wife keeps telling me, no more cars unless I build a garage. I had just kind of ignored the idea as I don’t have any space on my city lot of a third garage, then it occurred to me, I need to buy some land and build something. Lol.

Of course an ideal situation would be some land with a garage/pole barn already on it, but not sure if I will be able to find that.

I am guessing some of you have shops, or have in the past, and have input as to items you recommend or wish you did differently...

Here are my “needs:”

1). Room for 6 cars-but I am OK with stacking some of it makes financial sense

2). I don’t want any tight squeezes....meaning if it was laid out with drive-in spaces for 6, I want to pull in the 6th car and be able to whip open the door without fear of smashing a car next to me

3). I am a tinkerer and like doing my own work, so I would for sure put a lift in (no idea on style size, etc...)

4). Would be nice to be partially heated, as I live in ND and it gets pretty cold. However, I have a 4 car heated garage at my house already, so I don’t have the need (nor do I want to pay) to heat the entire garage. However, it would be nice if the lift area was heated-that way I could perhaps have 2 vehicles in the nice heated area and have a warm place to mess around on them in the winter

5). My vehicles rotate quite often, although I don’t see myself ever owning an RV, I was thinking it may be best to at least have 1 door that is really tall....14’ maybe?

6). This is just a fun space to put my toys and actually start keeping cars, rather than selling them so frequently just to clear up space.

7). Currently don’t have any other toys, but with increased storage, I am sure to accumulate some. (That is my reasoning for 6 car setup. I don’t really ever envision have 6 cars here and 4 at my house....however, add a boat, project car, etc...and space disappears quickly)

Any input on anything? Measurements, layout? I really have no idea.

Obviously this is a very vague thread, but just looking for some guidance.

I don’t want to spend more than I have to, but I want to do it right the first time and hope to eliminate future regrets or upgrades. I know prices vary by area and believe it or not, western ND is extremely expensive (due to the oil boom). I was hoping to build it (doors, lift, heat, but not counting the land) for under 50k-but like I said, I know nothing about garages.

Oh ya, feel free to post some pics of your garages/shops etc...

You should definitely check out the YouTube channel called Obsessed Garage. I have been following his channel since day 1. His videos are very informative. I recommend checking out his channel to get some ideas.

I'm not sure what area in ND that you reside but what's your budget? That's the first thing that you need to determine.

If your current 4 garage layout is tall enough, just add either a 2 post or a 4 post lift.

If you don't have room to add another garage in your home, I highly recommend looking into an industrial garage near your area. It's always good to have an open workspace rather than a cramped garage. I'm actually going to look at one tomorrow here in San Diego since my HOA doesn't allow any garage modifications and the ceiling isn't tall enough to add a lift.

does your current garage have headspace for a stacker?
Negative. Unfortunately.

This is about the best garage ceiling pic I have...I have very little clearance. The Supra will allow for more headroom than the H1, but there isn’t much..

Northwest corner of ND...bordering Canada and Montana. Bismarck (the link) is about 4 hours alway.

No room to go up on my garages, unfortunately.

Budget wise, was hoping 50k or less. I am not a mechanic or tradesman, although I love working on cars, I am a white collar guy. I mention that as some guys, I am guessing, can justify spending 100k+ for a garage, as they will use it for farm stuff or do other ancillary business work from it.....which won’t apply to me.

Ya, I hadn’t thought about the industrial garage route, but that might make more sense.

Thanks for the input.

ahh ok, stacking is out. You could alway get one of those pre-made garages if just being used for storage
