The wife keeps telling me, no more cars unless I build a garage. I had just kind of ignored the idea as I don’t have any space on my city lot of a third garage, then it occurred to me, I need to buy some land and build something. Lol.
Of course an ideal situation would be some land with a garage/pole barn already on it, but not sure if I will be able to find that.
I am guessing some of you have shops, or have in the past, and have input as to items you recommend or wish you did differently...
Here are my “needs:”
1). Room for 6 cars-but I am OK with stacking some of it makes financial sense
2). I don’t want any tight squeezes....meaning if it was laid out with drive-in spaces for 6, I want to pull in the 6th car and be able to whip open the door without fear of smashing a car next to me
3). I am a tinkerer and like doing my own work, so I would for sure put a lift in (no idea on style size, etc...)
4). Would be nice to be partially heated, as I live in ND and it gets pretty cold. However, I have a 4 car heated garage at my house already, so I don’t have the need (nor do I want to pay) to heat the entire garage. However, it would be nice if the lift area was heated-that way I could perhaps have 2 vehicles in the nice heated area and have a warm place to mess around on them in the winter
5). My vehicles rotate quite often, although I don’t see myself ever owning an RV, I was thinking it may be best to at least have 1 door that is really tall....14’ maybe?
6). This is just a fun space to put my toys and actually start keeping cars, rather than selling them so frequently just to clear up space.
7). Currently don’t have any other toys, but with increased storage, I am sure to accumulate some. (That is my reasoning for 6 car setup. I don’t really ever envision have 6 cars here and 4 at my house....however, add a boat, project car, etc...and space disappears quickly)
Any input on anything? Measurements, layout? I really have no idea.
Obviously this is a very vague thread, but just looking for some guidance.
I don’t want to spend more than I have to, but I want to do it right the first time and hope to eliminate future regrets or upgrades. I know prices vary by area and believe it or not, western ND is extremely expensive (due to the oil boom). I was hoping to build it (doors, lift, heat, but not counting the land) for under 50k-but like I said, I know nothing about garages.
Oh ya, feel free to post some pics of your garages/shops etc...
