that water drain channel is unrelated to the vent. It will be the drain for the water that gathers at the base of the windshield. All cars have some kind of evacuation system to drain water from there.

Not my car. Wingless mk3s, mmmmm... I think they look better with the later low pro turbo spoiler. Kinda like mk2s. The early wing is gross IMO (same with mk3s), they look fantastic with no wing, but I think best with the later low pro spoiler too.

No way, will come down to layout preference. I'm not a fan of mid engined or rear engined cars. A true 50:50 FR car is much more predictable and fun to drive IMO.
