Will this GR Corolla really directly compete with the STI? STI are 37k starting. I see this slotting above the Veloster N but below the STI. Somewhere in the 30k starting price range.
The next gen STI will most likely have the 2.4 turbo, which is why I don't see the 1.6 Corolla directly...
Shouldn't be a big deal. The best bang/dollar is removing the factory catalytic converter. This is basically just removing the factory cat and replacing it with a hollow tube that sits outside of the engine.
Per Toyota:
The increased output results from a slew of upgrades throughout the engine. The new dual-branch exhaust manifold, with six ports instead of two, improves heat management. A new piston design reduces the engine’s compression ratio from 11:1 to 10.2:1.
Toyota was probably able to...
Look at the specs published by Toyota. They literally tell you the torque curve. We're not comparing a flat 6 with an inline 6. MY20 and MY21 are basically still the same engines. Why would the torque curve even change that much?
Do you blame the CEO of a company or the analyst that forgot check one line on an excel spreadsheet when the public finds out the company hasn't been accurately reporting their financial statements?
Regarding the power bump...
The Toyota bean counters won at the end of the day. Obviously Toyota knew the power bump would piss off a lot of the early adopters, but Toyota also knew the MY20 335HP was overpriced given its price point. Just look at the Supras sitting in showrooms for 3-4k off...
I agree. We all want the best value. A MY20 and MY21 will most likely cost about the same, so it sucks for MY20 owners. If MY21 is being sold for 50k, then MY20 should sticker for 46k if we want to talk about value.
Not sure how you're pulling those numbers. The current 3.0 models can be easily had for 3k+ off MSRP. They're having a hard time selling them. What makes you think they're going to sell more by increasing the cost further? This is a Toyota. Let's get real here.

Do I win anything for my prediction?
Feel wise, it'll be about the same between MY20 and MY21. The torque is pretty much the same. Still doesn't change the fact that Toyota pretty much kicked early adopters right in the balls.
When these Supras start hitting the used market in 5-10 years, the MY20 will be worth less.
It's just a change in the torque curve, i.e., the torque doesn't dip as much after 4k RPM. HP is just a function of torque.
0-60 will feel about the same. The car won't seem like it's out of breath once you're past 80mph or so. You're still limited to 155mph or whatever.
