That doesn't make sense. If that were true, then it'd mean compressor is always on, which is not very efficient nor fuel economy friendly.
old post but for future reference... it's like most newer car compressor it does not slam compressor on and off via clutch but instead varies the displacement with pwm solenoid.

google: "variable displacement compressor"

Yep. Fully aware of it. Totally wasn't thinking things thru. My HVAC days are old. Indeed worked with bunch of Sanden variable disp. compressors back in the day.

God I get to be one of those necro thread revivers…so my pulley has begun to make noise. It’s intermittent, but consistently there. On a scale of 1-fucked, where am I?

Ouch ?

Everyone says use the search button before bringing up something new. When you do, you’re not supposed to respond (or revive in this case)?!? Hope someone knows how to fix it for ya or what needs to be done ?

Sounds like the pulley bearing. I just replaced mine around 60k miles. There might be a slick way to remove the pulley and put a new bearing in, but it's easier to just replace the compressor.

Service manual will say you need to take the radiator out, totally unnecessary, Supra has a ton of space. It's a an easy job, but the compressor is expensive.

So update. The pulley fully failed today on my way home from the collision shop. A friend of mine pointed me to a replacement pulley from germany. Includes everything I'll need to replace it.

From what he said, I can just use a generic pulley puller and it'll come off. Space is tight and removing the fan is recommended, but not entirely necessary if you have boney subaru spark plug hands like I have.

Oddly enough, ran into similar issue with my 335i with the N54 motor.
Started to get knocking noise, then hoped to replace the pulley only (similar to how the B58 ac compressor is designed) and snap ring also snapped off the lip for retainment. In last ditch effort, tried using bearing specific loctite + the reverse thread nut to keep pulley on, which it did, and within a few miles of driving, compressor locked up with new pulley, and shredded the belt. Was hoping to do pulley only so that wouldnt have to vacuum/recharge ac system, but didnt luck out.

Ended up just replacing entire ac compressor. Not sure what caused failure, since car is at 190k miles, and seems like it isnt the most common issue with N54's, and weird to see it happen on Supra now.
