I don't see much talk about ceramic coating downpipes. Is there any reason NOT to do it? Is it effective at helping control heat? Easier to just get a heat shield?

I have mine out getting coating currently and was just curious why it wasn't more common.

Are you having it done in the thermal barrier line? I’m interested to see your results, it should work to dissipate some heat but I don’t know how much obviously.
Honestly I'm not sure, I just know it's the same stuff that he uses to coat pistons and it's good up to 1800 degrees. No idea how effective it will be, but I figured with that and a shield it should at least help.

I went with Swaintech's White Lightning coating. It was twice as thick as the cerakote that I did on my manifold. Only downside (if you are picky) is that it only comes in white. The coating itself keeps heat in the downpipe and less in the engine bay.

no benefit in doing it on daily driver, if you track your car on regular basis, coating is helpful with temps
Can the same be said for a heat shield then? Seems like either/both should help keep IATs lower.

It does not hurt, for the track I would prob do it, on a daily meh. if i ever take my dp out again I may do it if I have time. better question is why do you have an aftermarket downpipe but I don't have your factory dp? lets get to it

You probably do! I bought the car with the aftermarket downpipe. Had to fix an exhaust rattle so pulled it off to get coated while it was up on the lift. Figured it wouldn't hurt and I'm glad I pulled it, because I discovered the previous owner didn't have a gasket on it ?‍♂
