My very first dash cam since i have been skeptical of using one. RedTiger sent me one for free provided i shared a review and my experience with it. Since my A90 has been in the shop for a bit i stuck on the daily.
The almost perfect for me Redtiger F77 dash cam has been a great addition to my 2018 4runner, and overall, I’ve been pretty happy with it. The front and rear camera records in 4K so the video quality is sharp. It gives me peace of mind knowing I have both front and rear coverage, especially in busy traffic or while parked. I hoped for a little more of a compact design, it sits behind my rear view mirror and I sticks out just a bit, I wish the screen wasn’t so big as I don’t like blocking the view out of the windshield.
Installation is straightforward with the provided hardwiring kit if you have a basic understanding of automotive electrical. This method gives you the G-sensor mode which will start recording if it senses impact while its parked and locked. If you can do without that feature and would rather not splice into your fuse box, it also comes with a cigarette lighter plug for a power source. The provided cables to run to the rear camera was plenty even for the 4Runner. I still had about 3 extra feet of cable I neatly tucked under the D-Pillar trim.
Mounting of the rear camera was tricky. I had to purchase a custom mounting plate and drill into my headliner. The rear camera was designed to be mounted directly to the rear glass but since the rear glass moves up and down in the 4Runner I had to get creative. Even still, with the mounting it to the headliner there is limited range of adjustment for the rear camera and it wont sit at the right angle i need it to. It sits facing too high.
Connectivity through the app you can get from free from the Appstore could be a little more streamline. It takes a while to connect and an even longer time downloading/saving videos onto your phone. When i tried saving a couple 5 minute videos onto my phone I had it set my phone to never lock the screen and would just walk away.
overall 3.8/5 stars. a little more range of adjustment for the cameras, more compact design for front camera, and a faster way to save videos onto your phone and it would be perfect. I may be looking for a smaller alternative for my much smaller Supra. if your looking to get one theyre currently 30% through their website til July 15th https://www.redtigercam.com/products/redtiger-f17elite-4k-3-channel-full-night-color-wifi6-dash-cam
