Hey guys. Used to be a Toyota tech an can tell you for sure that we could detect if you had a tune on it. An before you cry foul we used to get a lot of FRS and BRZ stuff in even the occasional moded 4Runner and loads of IS vehicles they go by 3 key things.
1.) key cycle. Every time you tune it erases the key cycles. So if you have maybe 1000 miles on your car with 10-20 keycycles you might get away with it but 6700 miles and you have 2 key cycles (because you drop the tune back to stock) they WILL see that. Was always present in the scan tool
2.) the engine data is sent to Toyota via the scan tool. One thing people don’t realize is that once you hook up that scan tool and get into the computers via Toyota’s programming all of that is instantly sent to Toyota. Now today they might have some form of AI that might flag something if the code is way off compared to stock but back in my 06-16 tenure they had someone go through the data on known modded cars. So you can bet your ass it’s being looked at today
3.) software updates. Now this could go with the whole plugging in the obd scanner but sometimes you get that glitch….but before it upgrades it will tell the tech what the current coding should be vs what it will be and if the old code doesn’t match they have to dig further and it either sent via pdf to Toyota’s tech line an they go over it. Now comes the Grey area. They have to prove it’s been modified and flashed.
If even one of those criteria is met above its game over guys. Now you can call Toyota (Japan) DO NOT CALL Toyota USA you won’t get anywhere….but chances are even Japan will say no. Now you can’t come back all pissed at the manu because of something YOU did. Just own it. If you go a bad tune, have a lawyer look over there contract or agreeements and see if you can hit the tuner but their liability shields are pretty decent so might be able to get them to pay but your gonna have a long legal battle.
just understand even visually even something as little as an air filter or intake your taking a chance. You have to go in knowing if you mod it’s game over for the warranty. Now I’ve heard some say it depends on the coverage like power train, body, etc…..just know this if you blow the engine and damage the trans from the engine neither are covered because that trans wasn’t designed for that power. If you want that to hold up (the trans) I highly recommend you drop the trans and send it to PureDrivetrainSolutions and have them build up before you do ANY major mods to the engine. Stage 0 (750hp+750tq) or stage1 (1000hp+750tq) $3,249 or $6000.
many questions just hit me up guys. Hope everyone had a good holiday
