Is there an easy way to access the lift gate for the trunk?

I tried to open my trunk and heard a weird mechanical noise coming from it and after reading the forums a lot of people said the lift gate needs to be replaced. I wanted to know if anyone has had this problem and fixed it themselves and if so how? I’m very tempted to pull on the cover piece but don’t want to accidentally break something.

It is a very poor design and the car needs a key lock in the back to release the lift.
