Looks pretty low but the residue on the engine cover has me a little worried but I don't see any other liquid or residue any where else

I have been getting the same message on cold start. After driving to full warmup and a restart, the message and yellow warning triangle goes away.
I've opened my reservoir when cold and no coolant is visible. Strange, as I was under the impression that low coolant means there is a leak.
Sooo, I'll go pick up a gallon of coolant so i can add to my "sealed" coolant system.

Get some BMW HT-12 (green) coolant and mix 50/50 with distilled water to top it off. I had the same thing happen last year, and haven't found any leaks or had an issue after filling it back to max.

Clean that filthy engine cover while you're at it OP lol
