In overall terms, its hard to argue against the G87 M2 being a better car: The interior leaves the Supra for dead; The engine is more powerful out of the box; The overall technology (entertainment and driving dynamics) is newer and updated. Just to state the obvious:
  • The M2 a newer design.
  • The M2 is a more expensive car (here).
  • The M2 is a full blown BMW M car and not a 3 (now 6+) year old parts bin Toyota BMW.
The only things we have on our side is that the Supra is cheaper; the reliability/support of a known engine; and the fact that even after five years, the Supra's looks still break necks every drive.
Don't forget that the Supra looks much better outside and that the manual transmission is vastly superior feeling.

Externally, sure.. no argument. The inside of a Supra however, is absolute dogshit compared to the new M2. And in this respect, calling the M2 in another league is, quite frankly, putting it mildly.
I'll be the first to accept any comment that is "the current M2 is a league above in interior design, quality and infotainment". I 100% agree. But if I'm shopping for a sports car, the interior design and quality aren't top priorities for me, not saying they aren't on the list of things I look for, just that they come further down the list after a bunch of other things that I care more about. If this was a grand tourer or luxury category, it would have much more weight in the discussion.

No arguments from me about the exterior.. but I'm really quite shocked that people consider the Supra's manual transmission to be anything but pretty mediocre. And if proper BMW transmissions are worse.. yikes!

Yeah, I'm not disagreeing. As an overall package though, Toyota really did skimp out on a bunch of things, particularly the interior. And I understand what you mean about priorities but if I buy a car, it's not just one aspect that I'm wanting dialed in. I want the whole car on point. Toyota really missed the brief when it came to the interior - both design wise and quality wise. Having said this, let me also quickly add that the Supra's interior is in another league compared to any other Toyota, so I guess we should consider ourselves lucky. ?

Unfortunately BMW manuals have been crap for awhile now. Oh and I'm not saying the Supra's manual is something amazing, if you want an amazing manual you either buy a Honda Civic Type R or a Porsche sports car. Everything else is quite a bit below those. The BMW is just a level below the Supra.

I get what you are saying about the interior, as a Toyota product it actually is quite good, but compared to the current BMW's it's no where near as good. But I'd say the exterior design of the two has just as big of a gulf between the current M2 and the Supra. So for me personally it's sort of a wash. We should also note, that it's not like the Supra's interior is some 90's Kia quality and design, it just lacks tech, color, and some upgraded materials.

The M2 may have released later than the Supra, but like the Supra, it's just BMW's modular CLAR platform underneath. They're very similar. Also a lot of parts are literally just ripped from the BMW M4 released in 2020. So it's not like the car is drastically newer. The only thing that's truly a big leap is the infotainment and interior quality. As far as driving dynamics they're pretty close with the M2 having the edge in straight line speed, but the Supra having the edge in the handling department.

It does not have an edge over straight line speed either?

You're overrating the g87 m2 a tad too much.

Yes it's a faster car overall. But not "leagues above" as you call it.

Edit: Unless you were frankly just talking about the interior, then yes.

Yeah.. I'm more talking about the overall package and the interior plays a big part. Beyond that, I agree that if we look at pure performance figures, there really isn't much in it.

See my earlier post below for what the article's author meant by "league above". Gotta love @Rocksandblues and @Syeeee - calling a man a troll, when ironically, it is they who troll! Fanboyz make me Laugh.Out.Loud. The MKV has been faulted SO many times in this thread that I hope more folks will consider the data within it before their purchase, and that Toyota will consider iteratively improving on the 2026+ MY (rather than killing the model!). Not that Toyota seems to care. Why they sell ~2k units annually and call it a day is BEYOND my logic. After reading all of these posts, I would confidently call the 3.0L MKV a $49k car new as $56k+ is too much.

@johnnyskids - the evo.co.uk author did pretty much expand on what he meant by league above (MKV chassis not as stiff as it could be, chassis will bite you, inability to maintain traction even @ moderate power, unsettled over inferior pavement, transmission programming needed iterative improvement).

To say the BMW is in a league above the MKV is a heedy statement - so heavy of a statement that I would posit that such superiority cannot be quantified and only felt behind the wheel. @6mtsoup has an opinion that DIRECTLY contradicts the evo.co.uk article, but both opinions are not formed from driving the same cars in the same places with the same conditions.

Also your comments on Honda/Porsche having best manual gearboxes seem to echo the trustworthy pundits. Finally - I would recommend folks consider the age of an e39/e46 BMW before diving in with their hard-earned dollars. Rubber and plastics corrode over time and these German stalwarts needed lots of both in highly important places. Reliability and driving feel will be negatively impacted by age.

interesting post

Do you even own a Supra? Anyone who joins a forum to stir the pot on a car they don't own is...wait for it...a troll.

100% this clown doesn't. He subtlety jabs whoever questions his reasoning and undermines the retail price. Questions why are people buying the mkV!!!

Ban this hack.

@SuupYota - your comment is just shortsighted my friend. Respectfully. Would one who owns a MKV but nonetheless stirs the pot be a troll? By your logic, they would not. Nor can you call my serious question(s) "stirring the pot". A troll is one who purposely attempts to incite folks for no reason other than to upset them. I have NEVER sought to do that for such behavior is sinful. My only interest is to run the evo.co.uk author's comments against a vast forum of folks who have real world experience with the Supra AND the F87. It will take a specialized community of folks to even find someone qualified (one who has driven the F87 and the MKV). Am I in the market for a MKV? Yes- but I have other cars in mind. If I was not in the market - I would not be so serious-minded about the car.
