Hey guys. Just wrapped up my mirror tap install. I'm not an electrician or a mechanic by any means, but I did it. For reference, the Mirror Tap kit I used was this one - https://www.ebay.com/itm/326345914501?var=515882627820
I purchased the one with the RJ4 and Micro USB to use with a stupid KAWA dashcam and an R4W. Didn't feel like removing that much trim, and it seemed easy enough (cursed mentality), so I thought I'd give it a go.
Overview:
The removal is the easy part. You can watch any mirror tap video for this. The only difference is this product he sells actually plugs into the main mirror harness and not the rain sensor.
I have a feeling the previous owner had something done with it because I basically removed the trim with my hands, and then the mirror kinda fell off. To figure out how to take the power adapter out of the mirror, I watched this - (starting at 2:30 for the part I cared about)
OK now the simple part. Connect the parts that connect. Pretty straightforward.... Now for the part where I'm going to save you time:
Each half of the rearview mirror trim has a semicircle. I sent my RJ4 and Micro USB cable straight down around each side of the mirror stem. I actually gave up on hiding anything in the mirror trim because it was too finicky, and I didn't want to break anything. The trim fits well when you do it like this. I found all efforts to use zipties or twistee ties useless because there was just too much cable that came with this adapter. At which point it's my car, and I'm the one who has to live with it and that's fine by me.
Only casualty was some shitty old electrical tape on the original harness but it's secure in the trim so im not worrying about it anymore.
TLDR
Super easy to remove all the crap.
Super easy to install
Mirror trim is too small to even bother hiding things in. I will likely hide my cables behind my mirror and in my headliner.
It turns off after 8 mins (tested & confirmed)
If anyone cares enough for pictures let me know.
