Interesting question.. if anyone has done this, I would like to know whether there is any excessive oil dripping from the filter when the filter housing is removed from the car (before starting the car).. if at all.

My assumption is that there is minimal oil inside the filter before engine is started so would make for a cleaner filter swap.. (?)

It’s a good thing it’s not one of those metal canister type filters on the bottom of the engine like a Chevy.

Oil from crankcase?
100% easy to do, just grab your 32mm socket. I replaced the filter this weekend at the beginning of the oil change job. Threw a towel around the filter housing out of caution, but the only thing that got on the towel was a couple drops from the filter itself when I removed it.

I swapped the filter before draining the oil per some YouTube video that said it was the "proper" way to do it on these engines. It stated opening the filter housing first allowed some retained oil to move to the pan, and thus allowing all the oil to drain out. I doubt it matters one way or the other.
