I need an idea of what might fit the rear speaker mounts size-wise. Is there a good amount of depth behind the mount that would allow for a large magnet, or is the space pretty limited? The Bavsounds seem significantly bigger, but not sure how much larger than that is possible. Any relevant photos would be helpful or suggestions.

If your inquiring about the rear "side" speakers this video below should give you a good idea of clearance behind the rear side speakers....

Sorry, yes, rear sides. And yes, that video suggested to me that most any 4” speaker would fit the space behind, but I wasn’t sure.

I have some extra BMW speaker pigtails that I bought when I did my M240i, so I hope I can make changing the rear-sides so easy that even a biologist can do it.

Just a side note: If your replacing those rear 4" speakers and expecting to achieve better sound quality and a higher sound level you might be somewhat disappointed...The OE HK amp' internal DSP is setup such that the outputs to those rear side speakers are significantly attenuated and were only meant to add spacial depth (which the amps' internally programmed DSP still does a poor job at achieving IMO)...

Well now, that’s an important and unfortunately good point. Replacing the rears in my BMW did noticeably help, but it isn’t the same amp so I’m not sure the results would be similar.

Anyway, thanks for knowing so much useful stuff!

The AMP is "similar" but not the same with respect to DSP programming of outputs which is programmed dependent on interior acoustic qualities unique to each vehicle...

It looks like the rear brace needs to be removed to access the 4” rear/side speakers, correct? If so, is that easy or a production?

yes, that correct and it's not difficult....it's secured on each side with one bolt....you'll need to remove a few panels to get to it...
