The article sounds choppy and confusing. So the MR-2 successor will be the S-FR?

Toyota 86 - Toyota/Subaru
Toyota Supra - Toyota/BMW

Then that means

Toyota MR2 - Toyota/Lotus?

What you guys think? It supposedly happened with the last generation? Or do you think it will be in-house?

New Toyota Supra – leaked details keep coming ahead of 2018 reveal

There are few names that carry so much weight as Toyota Supra for those brought up during the model line's 80s and 90s heyday. Now Toyota’s plan to resurrect the name involves BMW which it will share in the development and produce its new Z4 on the same platform.

To be built alongside the upcoming Z4 roadster, the new Toyota Supra will not only share a front engined, rear-wheel drive platform, but will likely also use a cross section of BMW power units according to new leaked internal BMW documentation. Expected engine options include two 2-litre turbocharged four-cylinders and a 3-litre turbocharged straight-six, all exclusively paired to an automatic gearbox.

By looking at the equivalent engines that sit in new model BMWs, we estimate that the new Supra could have up to 350bhp in six-cylinder format. The bad news for purists is that unlike the BMW, Toyota doesn't appear to planning a manual gearbox option at this stage, no doubt a disappointment for those hoping the new Supra would mimic the playful demeanor of the smaller GT86 in a more substantial, powerful package.

The new Supra has been developed as part of Toyota’s plan to release a trio of performance cars. Set to sit at the top of the new group of sports models, it will be the biggest, most powerful car of the 'three brothers'. A replacement for Toyota’s small roadster, the MR2 will be the smallest and lightest while the GT86, which will be subject to constant development, will fill the gap between the two new cars.

The previous generation Supra went off sale in 2002, but it still remains popular with car enthusiasts thanks to an abundance of tuning parts and for its ability to produce quite ludicrous amounts of power from its robust turbocharged straight-six engine.

Just because the new Supra will be Toyota’s largest, flagship performance model don’t think for a minute that it will be a ponderous and heavy beast. Toyota engineer and Gazoo Racing chief, Teysuya Tada, told evo what we could expect from the new sports car, and very promising it was too: 'A Supra should be lighter than it’s rivals. Personally speaking, my favourite Porsche is the Boxster and Cayman, although I am a little disappointed with the four-cylinder engine. The Cayman helps a lot of us here to make a sports car.'

A heavily camouflaged version of the next generation Supra has already been spotted testing, and we expect the new car to be revealed next year. Exact details of the car’s specification aren’t know yet, however Toyota has divulged that it will be built on a platform that it has co-developed with BMW.

Initial rumours suggest that the Supra may also use one of the Munich manufacturers straight-six engines. However, that seems unlikely now but the origins of the gossip probably stems from Toyotas contempt for a lack of pistons. Tada’s disappointment with the 718 Cayman’s lack of cylinders suggests that the Supra may end up with more than four pistons.

Unlike Toyota’s back-to-basics sports car, the GT86, we expect the new Supra to be powered by a much more high-tech drivetrain. Toyota has admitted it is also open to creating a hybrid sports car at some point in the future, but because this is part of the company’s long term plan, we expect the Supra to be petrol-only initially. A hybrid version may follow later, but our conversation with Tada revealed he was very excited about the idea of a mid-engined hybrid sports car. Expect the next MR2 to get a supplementary electric motor before the front-engined Supra.

Rather than a full hybrid system, the new Supra may use electrics to gently help increase the performance of its petrol engine. Toyota has applied for a patent for an electric supercharger, the plans are in depth and suggest the technology is close to being production ready; possibly in time for the Supra’s 2018 launch.

The application shows a standalone electric compressor, but unlike the one used in the Audi SQ7, Toyota’s solution uses, what looks like, a turbine and compressor housing from a conventional turbocharger. Rather than the turbine shaft being spun by exhaust gasses though, an electric motor generates the movement.

Isn't this article months old? Just a bunch of rehashed rumours that we already know?

I love Toyota Supra , Mazda rx-8 , Nissan Z (350Z AND 370Z) , Fiat 500
Some of us are happy with the return of Toyota legacy with sports cars , but they don't have any plans for a next-gen GT86 and 86 may be discontinued next year or in 2019! So which Toyota Sport Car you think will come next? The legend "Supra"? A new "Supra" Concept? Or a new MR2 or Roadster Sport Car?

the end? on multiple occasions reps from toyota & subaru have discussed going for a 2nd generation..it may not be guaranteed but neither company has claimed they've given up on the platform not to mention it is very rare for toyota to only create 1 generation for any platform..with the amount of enthusiasm the twins have brought they would be pretty silly not to keep the hype going. toyota has also discussed a 3 sports car lineup for quite some time now..

The fact that after 5 1/2 years of production there has not been one spy shot of a second-gen 86 prototype or even mule makes me pessimistic about the possibility of a new one. It seems as if Toyota's going to go the 370Z route, and stick to making minor updates to the current model until sales totally fall off a cliff.... after that, who knows?

This appears to be a bmw 2 series or m2 but it isn't. If you look closely it is shorter , only the shell is derived from the m2 / 2 series. It is a possible reintroduction of the z3 which there were rumors that it will be a project again with bmw but with the succesor of the 86 this time for a mid pack sports car.

..think about it, they had to share costs for the supra with bmw...they aren't going to start funding yet another project when we don't even know when the supra will finalize and actually get a sale. and ya gotta be fair, concept cars which use the 86 platform like the recent gr hv, do showcase the future of what toyota has in store..

I own a brz and if the new supra doesn't come with a manual transmission I will be holding on to my car for a very long time. All indications are that both cars are roughly the same size so I don't really see where they can go with the GT86. All of the complaints are about mediocre power but adding any more would encroach on the twice as expensive "new supra". If there's a second gen 86 I bet it will be more of the same maybe topping out at around 225hp. They could drop a NA version of the new subaru 2.4 cyl and go for 100hp per liter again making 240hp which honestly wouldn't be that bad if they fixed the "torque dip".

Toyota should just make the SF-R the new Celica. Than squeeze a new MR-2 in between that and the new Supra. :D
