i was looking for places to affix a roof rack and found two covered channels in the roof, filled with a painted plastic strip. i i c find no documentation on the function of these strips, or on a Toyota rack system. Does anyone have any information on this?

They are body panel joints -- you may see spot welds or adhesive beads under the trim piece. The channels double as rain gutters. Don't know about the Supra, but on most BMW models there are threaded boss mounts in 4 places under the trim pieces that can be used to attach a roof rack. On BMWs with this feature, there is usually a little flap in the trim piece that you can flip open to access the mounts.
