This can affect any car with metallic compound brake pads and steel rotors. I thought this was common knowledge. Can even happen after driving in the rain.
I always take my cars for a short lap around the block after washing if they will be parked, being sure to apply and drag the brakes a...
It surely adds stiffness in plane when that brace is in tension. By it's design, it would have no benefit with loads out of plane, so do not judge it in other scenarios. Rope could also be considered flimsy but can take a whole lot of load in tension.
We had a 2016 Cayman GTS and my opinion is that what you felt is characteristic of Porsche and not easily reproduced in a Toyota/BMW platform. The Cayman GTS is a league above the Supra and my M2 Comp. There may also be something about the dynamics of the Cayman's rear-mid engine layout that...
The same gearbox in BMWs will have a little extra resistance when making lazy shifts into 3rd, say when just tooling around at part throttle or shifting at lower RPM. If you notice the behavior go away when really getting on it and shifting at higher RPM, then I'd say it's normal behavior...
If anything that should make upshifts smoother, since it holds the engine RPM where it needs to be for the next gear at the current road speed. As long as you don't delay, it should be a very good match (has been in my experience).
I'd want a tech to check over the clutch hydraulics (both...
Not sure where the "0.75" number came from, but on BMWs, the actual offset at typical driving speeds has been +3 km/h (= +2 mph) for as long as I can remember.
None of my other vehicles have an offset (they all display the actual speed) but every BMW I have owned since 2010 always reads 2 mph high.
By default, the Supra has rev-matched upshifts (which are much more subtle than rev-matched downshifts). Some people classify it as weird shifting or even rev hang, but it's not. During an upshift, if you watch the tach, you'll see RPM quickly drop to the appropriate point for the next gear...
I wouldn't compare the G87 M2 to the Supra any more than I'd compare the G87 M2 to the Z4 M40i. You have to remember these are much different platforms, especially in size and weight. Of course the M2 will weigh more than the Supra given the basic platform characteristics. To be honest, both...
I still had droning harmonics after trying to disable ASD with Bimmercode, but pulling the ASD fuse ultimately got rid of them. Some of the issues are due to how the ASD sound processor interfaces with the car audio and speakers.
#6 is due to active sound design -- they pipe fake engine noise through the stereo system speakers (a BMW feature). I find it annoying and disable it on my BMWs when possible. On some cars you just need to pull a specific fuse. Don't know about the Supra, but since it's on a G platform there...
@NitroYellowMKV -- I am curious if the car has rev-matched upshifts like my M2 Comp. Take a look at the tach right after you push the clutch in and get off the throttle during an upshift, and you should see the revs quickly drop and hold at the RPM that is perfect for the next gear. It makes...
This lines up with what was known months ago by digging through the parts diagrams (available through BMW, requires paid subscription though). All Toyota did was remove the acoustic package, revise the clutch arrangement, and heavily massage the shifter. The gearbox itself is unchanged.
I...
The units I gave part #s for are exclusive to BMW and have BMW-specific interfaces. ZF makes S6 transmissions for other manufacturers as well but it's not relevant to the discussion. I feel like we're going around in circles here with people stating common information that is well known in the...
The new Supra gearbox is BMW part # GS6L50TZ.
The older Z4 gearbox (basis for the new one) is BMW part # GS6L40LZ.
They are both BMW-exclusive units manufactured by ZF.
There have been at least 5-6 articles and Youtube reviews where Toyota has been quoted saying this was an existing BMW manual transmission adapted with existing BMW parts and modifications to create the unit in the Supra (Z4 and M3 units were mentioned as origins). Just take the time to...
It's a unique transmission only destined for the Supra but that's about the extent of the "GR-ness". If that makes people feel better about the car, fantastic, but I personally don't think the Supra needs this kind of ongoing validation. People have been trying to spin the car's development...
The engineers went through the same process used to develop manual transmissions for the M cars which have to handle higher power, higher mechanical loads, and higher thermal loads compared to non-M models. They almost always ditch the acoustic package, use beefed up mechanicals, switch to a...
Yep, Toyota has been very forthcoming about this, which is a big improvement from 3 years ago when they were tight-lipped about the collaboration with BMW. Maybe they were afraid to give away too much credit back then. But this time around they have shared the info with anybody who asks (and...
