Glad you got to spend some time with him. Don't let another 2 years go by before you do it again. I think for a lot of us, me included; our dads are the reason we're into cars the way we are ...

I just got back home to Wisconsin from the Nashville area. I went to go with my dad to the Nashville Cars and Coffee event. We had been planning the trip since last summer.

Now I’ve never shared, but my dad is an Engineer, driver and huge car enthusiast. He’s also getting older, at 72, now.

Since December, I’ve been building this Toyota Supra. Mostly because I wanted to build something that he could look at and be proud, be able to see the change that I’ve made in my life. I didn’t always make the best decisions, and I put my dad through a lot. So in about 4 months, I completed everything on my build list, literally days before the event.

I made the long 11 hour journey in the Supra, and arrive late around 8PM Friday. To get a spot at the event, you need to be there by 7 AM, and we are an hour away. I plan to meet my dad the next day at 5:30 AM.

I arrive at his house at our scheduled time, and when he comes to the door I quickly realize that this is not happening. My dad. He’s not well, see — he has Parkinson’s, and recent back surgeries, and some serious cancer reconstruction.

It’s been two and a half years since I’ve seen him. And it’s as if he’s aged 20 years.

He putters his way outside braced by a cane, and he is determined to sit in the Supra, and to go to this event. And I begrudgingly help him, slowly back into the car, brace against the door to help him in. I have to move his feet inside the car for him. The bolster hurts. I have to move him to the middle of the seat.

I’m kneeling beside him, helping him in and I tell him “Dad, we are not going to the event.” He responds that he doesn’t want to disappoint me. And I tell him I don’t care about the event at all, I just wanted him to see the car, that I would make the trip a hundred times over. He tells me that he is proud, and that the car is like a work of art.

The rest of the day I’ll save selfishly.

This forum has been a great place to learn and build with this platform. I think I’m at the “Huston, we’ve landed.”stage here, and I’ll be updating my build post once more.

That said, thanks for listening and the friendships that I’ve made here along the way.
This is what it’s all about. I take care of people like your father at work often, and I know they reflect on their children the most when I’m there. You made him proud. Excellent build my man.

100x better than struggling through a stupid Cars and Coffee, there will be more. I'm glad you got to hang with your pops. My parents also live in TN, I should make the trip down to see them soon.

Anyway, your car does look great. Try to make it down to our May 15th event in Chicago. I don't think you're all that far away.
Not to get off topic, but whats the May 15th event in Chicago? I dont really do social media too much, so I may be out of the loop. Wouldn't mind stopping by.

That looks like Dominion Speedway. Have had my Miata and GenCoupe there a couple of times. Were you running with a group or was that one of their self hosted track day events?
I am a member there. We have 40 track days a year. anywhere from 3- 20 members so up. So TONS of track time. My guests get physically tired before they run out lap sessions. :)

PM me if you ever want to come as my guest. I can send you a link to our calendar.
Going to Summit this weekend and signed up for a couple SCCA TT events this spring so far too.

We do a monthly "Supras and Donuts" in the North Suburbs then head over to North Suburbs Cars and Coffee as a group. We usually get a spot together if we're early enough. We also fit in a 30-45 minute cruise between Donuts and Cars and Coffee through little towns. It's a blast. There are usually 10-15 of us. I'm in the Episode 4 Banner Image with a couple friends.
