I’m a foodie, always have been. Never really been “thin” since I was in my mid teens, but I’ve taken up intermittent fasting and have lost 15% body weight since the beginning of February with an overall goal of losing 30% before taking delivery of my 2023

Good on you. I fast every day from 8pm till the day next 4 pm
Metabolism grinds to a crawl after 50. that and exercise is the only way I can keep it "tight" If you stay fit in 40's and 50's you are soon in the "minority" as a country we are basically all obese. Keep at it

Sneakers and Watches. I've always been into sneakers since the late 90's. In 2014 I sold them to buy my wife her wedding ring and band. My current collection is a little over 70 pairs.

For watches, I grew up wearing G shocks. I still have a few G shocks but now trying to get into automatics. Started out with a few Seiko's and looking into less expensive Swiss movements....

The only thing I would really consider a Vice for me is collecting watches. While I do smoke (vape mainly), that’s a pretty cheap habit. Buying, collecting, fixing and flipping “luxury” watches is too fun. Sometimes, you make a killing. Especially these days where people are low on cash so they sell their Rolex or whatever. I scoop em up. Fix or service them and if I don’t want to keep it, I sell for profit.

It’s a very time consuming hobby but something I’ve always enjoyed. Nothing beats the feeling you get when you reassemble a broken watch that you fixed and it starts ticking

i guess it is a bit like cars. Mechanical engineering. Just on a micro scale.

my collection is thin these days since I’m not spending as much as I used to. (had a kid 2 years ago). Still, if I see a good deal on an undervalued or easy fix piece that I know I can sell for profit easily, I’ll be perfectly happy paying $50k or whatever for a watch. Especially if I know I can sell it for $80k later after spending about $5-$10k on parts.

just like cars though, 1 simple mistake can cost you a lot of money.
I am curious how you go about buying expensive used watches to fix/restore in the 10K - 50K range? I'd be scared of being scammed with fakes etc - I don't think I'd ever trust buying something for 20k+ on ebay etc, and sure as hell not on Facebook.

Oh. I’ve been doing this for a VERY long time. Fakes are pretty easy to tell. Easy example is looking at the white gold hour markers. Rolexes NEVER had sharp angles. They’re always curved. Slightly but definitely curved edges. You just have to zoom in. Plus, people selling fakes are usually very sketchy and will not meet you at a Rolex AD. Even though they won’t do anything about it.

Franken watches are a bit tougher. Franken watches pretty much has genuine parts that you can see. Like dials, crowns, hands. Basically, anything you can see will be all genuine parts.

When you open the case up and see the movement is where you can tell. Even then, it’s a bit tougher. Especially with fakes getting better and better.
I typically only deal with locals. Pawn shops, Facebook market place, subreddits..etc.

Some pawn shops have NO IDEA what they have sometimes. “It doesn’t run”. I’ve had a few of those. I buy it, take it apart, and it could just be one screw that popped out and got stuck on the balance spring. It could just be 1 gear that’s worn down. Those are usually a few hundred at most.

I have been screwed before but you kind of have to expect that sometimes. When I do, I just part the watch out and sell it as parts. Sometimes you actually make more money for parts. Especially for rare parts like Rolex’s open 6/9 date discs for a 3135. Those alone can easily sell for $300. I usually only deal with Rolexes. Mainly because they’ll always be worth something. Typically more than what you paid for. Plus, I know more about Rolexes than any other brand. Working on them is soo much easier. It’s like a puzzle. Everything that’s supposed to be there, snaps right in. No wiggling around. No tension when you’re trying to screw something down..etc

i don’t do it nearly as much as I used to since I have a kid now. A few years ago, that’s pretty much all I did on weekends.

nowadays, I just trade stocks for passive income. High yield funds. Sometimes, I do squeeze plays..etc. Though active investing hurts when you file taxes. So I try to keep my portfolio with just dividend yielding stocks and funds.

For fun, I just go to casinos. Haven’t done that in a few years but, they typically give me sweet deals. Flights and hotel rooms. Food credits and casino credits. They don’t do much of that lately since they’re all down on cash since COVID.
