The best thing about Z5 is that it so well disguised that there are virtually no clues to how it will actually appear.

But close up photography shows such details to reflect its now intentions. Such as very low nose and wide kidney grille.

But yes Z5 will be a serious sports car. It will have a Carbon content that will shame high end sports cars as well as a weight advantage. Hence why a soft top roof has now been adapted.

A benefit of pooling resources between BMW and Toyota in which costs shared over materials allows increased implementation.

The car exercises a very light and minimalistic cockpit, important for a sports car but still current with modern technology and luxuries.

Of course as for this car engines will be familiar, but the outputs will be exclusive and a manual will be available for the more enthusiastic driver.

BMW and Toyota will offer differing designs. The BMW launches first as a Roadster whilst the Toyota comes as a Coupe. Then vice versa.

The same sentiment applies for the forthcoming Z3 against the replacement for the GT86.

You cannot really see much as they have cleverly and intentionally applied panelled camouflage to the bodywork to disguise every single line and detail. But it is an incredible looking car developed from the design of the Vision ConnectedDrive and 328 Hommage Concept cars. But larger and more stretched.

The Z5 will utilise a Carbon Core which will be highly advanced for its segment.

The Z5 is to spear BMWs revitalised sports car programme to adhere to a unique philosophy similar to BMWi but for the Sports Car and Performance segment specialising in lightweight materials , advanced construction, individual design and dynamics. Engines will start from a unique four cylinder to a potentially powerful Power eDrive model with up to 500 PS and eBoost which was used under the body of the CSL Hommage/R.

After the Roadster is implemented a Coupe will follow. As are potential M Models. But nothing is fully confirmed for those as yet.

Clever. I know they do amazing things to conceal the true shape using foam and padding but the screwing actual panels to the car and using the swirly black and white camo to make it seem like that's the true shape is really going out of their way.

I still have faith just based on the FT1 that the Supra will be the better looker.
This is a good watch.

Ah drilling into the car! My eyes!

Check out this new camouflage by Ford. Gonna make it even harder to tell car's shape.

2018 BMW Z5 spy shots

It was in 2011 that we first caught wind of BMW and Toyota’s plans to jointly develop a “mid-size sports car platform” to spawn replacements for their respective Z4 and Supra models.

Today we have new spy shots of a prototype for the BMW, which we’re expecting to be called a Z5. Adopting the new name links the car with BMW’s legendary 507, and it should also enable the automaker to position the car higher than the Z4 and thus charge a steeper price.

The higher positioning is supported by the larger size of the prototype compared to the Z4. The shots also reveal similar proportions to the Z4 though there's expected to be a soft-top roof as opposed to a retractable hard-top. We can also make out the new grille design in one of the shots.

The higher positioning should translate into improved performance. After all, the new car will be going up against entry-level versions of cars like the Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911. The base model may end up with an inline-4 but we’d expect an inline-6 option to prove the most popular. All should feature turbocharging as standard.

While there’s been talk of hybrid technology being used, BMW will likely forgo this to differentiate the Z5 from Toyota’s Supra successor, which has also been spied and is expected to go the gasoline-electric route. Sadly, we’ve heard there’s no plan for a BMW M-tuned version.

Look for the debut of the new BMW sports car, whatever it's labeled, in late 2017 or early 2018. It’s too early to talk pricing but expect a premium on the $50k starting price of the Z4. The good news is that the higher positioning of the Z5 may pave way for a new entry-level sports car in BMW’s lineup, a model rumored to be called the Z2.

Though yet to be confirmed, it’s thought the jointly-developed models will be built at a Magna-Steyr assembly plant in Austria starting in 2018. Sharing a production facility makes sense considering the low volumes of pricey sports cars.

Internally, the BMW Z4 / Z5 listens to the abbreviation G29. Whether the roadster will be called Z4 or Z5 is still not quite certain. Fix is, on the other hand, the model carries a classic fabric fold roof. Technically, the new BMW Z4 comes from the BMW shelf - it receives the axles of the current BMW M3 and is to weigh only 1,400 kilos on the scale thanks to lightweight materials.

BMW's Product Plan Includes Over 25 New Or Updated Models By 2021

BMW is planning a host of Life Cycle Impulse (facelifted) models and a selection of all-new products in the next five years.

Auto Motor und Sport has learnt that no less than 28 new or refreshed BMW models will hit the market from now until 2021, kicking off with the global launch of the new 5-Series Touring at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Soon after, it is reported that the BMW 5-Series GT will be replaced by a 6-Series GT borrowing technology from the latest 5-Series. The 6-Series GT will be approximately 100 kg (220 lbs) lighter than the equivalent existing car and be offered with four, six and eight cylinder engines with power ranging from 190 hp to 465 hp.

Also this year, the BMW X2 will debut and initially be offered with the same small petrol and diesel engines of the X1. The next-generation X3 will also bow some time this year and be the brand's first SUV model using its CLAR platform. This platform will also spawn the long-awaited BMW X7, set to be constructed at the brand's Spartanburg plant in the United States.

Things will continue for BMW throughout 2017 with the all-new M5 and M2 GTS to both launch in the second half of the year. We already know that the M5 will benefit from all-wheel drive and will have a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 delivering over 600 hp. The M2 GTS on the other hand will get an uprated turbo'd 3.0-liter engine lifting power to the 400 hp mark.

Next year will also prove rather fruitful for BMW particularly with the launch of the Z5 sports car, currently in development with Toyota alongside the next-generation Supra. What's more, the famed BMW 8-Series will be resurrected in 2018 and directly rival the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe. It will give birth to a Cabriolet variant in 2020.

Before that happens, 2018 will also see the debuts of the next-generation 3-Series and X5.

450 HP BMW Z5M Rumors Intensify as 2018 BMW Z5 Prototype Hits the Nurburgring

This week sees the Nurburgring being as busy as ever when it comes to automakers testing their upcoming models and one of the most important future development currently doing its thing on the Nordschleife is the 2018 BMW Z5.

We've shown you the Z5 on previous occasions and we can say the same about the other fruit of the BMW-Toyota sportscar collaboration, which could bring the revival of the Supra badge - as those of you following the sportscar realm know, the Bavarians are expected to stick to the open-top architecture, while Toyota should go with the fixed-roof approach to prevent cannibalization.

Nothing has been officially confirmed though - even the Z5 moniker of the sportscars we can see in these spyshots is still a tentative one.

And while the prototype is a "civilian" version of the upcoming Z4 successor, its presence on the Nordschleife makes the Z5M rumors intensify.

Nowadays, BMW's M division makes more money than ever, with most of the credit for this going to the diversification of the line-up. We've been talking about the upcoming 2018 BMW M4 facelift over the past two days, as the mid-cycle revamp is expected to spawn both a "standard" M4 and a follow-up for the M4 GTS, which gets the M4 CS tentative nameplate.

The N55 twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six powering those cars could also make it under the hood of the recently-spied M2 CS, but that's not all. The powerplant should also end up animating the Z5 range-topper, along with the obvious M badge.

As for the hp number of the possible Z5 M, the open-top proposal should sit at about 450 hp. However, we still have to wait for the two-seater to enter a more advanced development stage before we can get our hands on a spyshot clue towards this side of the Z4 successor story. Meanwhile, we're inviting you to pay close attention to these Ring photos, as the overly camouflaged prototype demands such an attitude.
