I'd very much like to go the single route.

Honestly, the single system is superior for flow/scavenging, power potential, and in my opinion, sound.

Listen to the single at the 4:10 mark, sounds a lot like the old JZ Supra! The only trouble is, the single sounds kinda lousy with a catless downpipe, so I likely have to build it custom with an extra resonator or two..
That does almost sound like an old 2J. Would sound so much better with the crackle tune turned off so could hear the motor.

Have you heard a single exit titanium with a catless downpipe in person?

Just remembered lol, he modified the aimgain diffuser
Ahh, that would explain the vortex generators being like they are. I'm guessing they did regular body work to close the hole then skinned the entire thing with CF. Yeah, I don't see that coming out as a commercial product. Starting with a $1k part, then adding a bunch of labor isn't a good starting point. :)

The current plan is to use both a plug and a CF cover mounted with 3M tape so this should be completely reversible as well.
I thought it was going to be a complete replacement If the rear diffuser. I think just a cover would look tacked on. Also, Maki g a cover for whole rear piece just to cover one hole sounds a bit excessive, unless the cover also acts as some sort of functional diffuser.

Yes, I've heard the single exit with catless downpipe, and heard the Boost Logic system with catless downpipe. Both were obnoxiously loud, and very "coarse" and "tinny" in tone, as opposed to the smooth turbo I6 sound many of us know and love. The Boost Logic was actually awful, and others nearby agreed. I'm betting that both of these systems (and it seems all of the other MKV catbacks) were engineered for good sound with a stock or performance catted pipe. I also think it's practically impossible to get that smoothness with a dual exit system, regardless of downpipe.

Making a full CF replacement of the rear diffuser would require a two part mold and prepreg fabric with an oven larger than I currently have access to. I hope to be able to offer something like that in the near future, but for now my fabrication abilities are limited to two dimensions.

My plan is to have something almost identical to what is on that 2jz build posted earlier. This will mean that there will be two different material types on the diffuser, but they seem to compliment each other well to me. Does the diffuser on that 2jz build seem like it has something tacked on to you?

I know it's early days but what are you tentatively thinking on pricing?

Thanks for that info. Just one more reason to start looking for a high-flow catted down pipe. Not sure why this car smells so bad to me when other catless cars don't.

For real, the smell is quite strong and pungent.

I love it actually. The single exit folks, of which there are many, are really wanting this.
I guess it's a Mk4 thing.. but these are Bimmers, not Nagoyans..

My current thinking is to use resin infusion and two layers of 3k CF, so the materials cost isn't too bad. A lot of the cost is from the initial tooling, which is pretty expensive in both time and material. I can offer them unfinished with this being something people might want to paint or wrap, which cuts a lot of the per item labor. Just ballparking, but $300-$400 for the cover ready for finish.

Do you think it would look better if the CF in the diffuser flowed into some CF lower spats / side skirt extension / splitter, giving it a more intentional look? Or would a two tone diffuser just simply never look right to you?

Make a forged carbon version. Please and thank you

Ideally, I'd prefer something that looked OEM in the sense of matching up to the stock satin black finish. For example, the Verus Engineering rear diffuser looks similar enough to the stock finish that the car could look like it came that way to a casual observer. That said, I think a CF product similar to the grey 2JZ swapped A90 would look good. If it is at or generally around the price point you mention above, I would buy that.
