Yes.. agreed with the above. Blaming the market is the easy way out and not seeing the actual problem.

Looks at toyota’s current line up.. Camry, RAV4, Corolla sell very well and they get updated etc.

Sequoia, 4Runner, LC (got a recent update but lackluster one), Tundra are no way in sync with where the market is. Isn’t SUVs all the rage these days?? Why ignore these guys for 12yrs now.. come on!!
have you seen sales figures? Plenty of folks still buy those vehicles despite how old they are, they are a totally different crowd than those that buy Highlanders & RAV4s. There are still consumers that want traditional setups without all the modern gadgetry & tech. In fact, last year the 4Runner had its 2nd best sales year ever..

I agree with you on the Sequoia/Tundra. They need to be replaced ASAP. Don't get me started on the LC. Using a decade old motor on your $92k flagship coupe. I would have gone with the new V35A instead. Or at the very least done that instead of the LC500h. And to another point, why do they keep trying to shove these expensive hybrids down everyone's throat? I mean the GS450h and LS600h were such great sellers.

4Runner sells in the southern states and that’s about it. My friend still has brand new MY 16 in his lot in NY.

Sequoia doesn’t sell at all.. comparing it to the likes of Tahoe and Expedition. It’s not even a drop in the bucket. It’s not the market to blame there. It’s a 10yr old truck to blame.

LC doesn’t sell at all compared to a loaded up Tahoe or even an entry level Escalade. No where near.

pretty much nailed it as far as demographics go, but Toyota really should update those vehicles soon (probably in the works, at least for the 4 Runner, as that thing is ancient inside).

but I'll also add that certain vehicles exist just to fill a gap in the lineup in order to pull and maintain market share. unfortunately, when you exist to maintain the status quo you don't get much attention or budget.

and yeah, the LC motor decision wasn't a great one IMO, especially in a vehicle that was supposed to be a "cheaper LF-A"

A "cheaper" LFA is still ane xpensive car. I still wondered how the LFA would be if it wasn't pushed back so many times.

I think we've been referring to the Land Cruiser, not the Lexus LC :p

4Runner sells everywhere pretty decently...think you're contradicting yourself if you personally know someone that got a new one in NY lol..and we're only talking about the US here as Toyota sells its platform mates very respectably in Australia, Russia and developing markets. Sequoia may not be a sales leader but it still has very solid sales, comparable to the 4Runner despite being more expensive and this doesn't take into account the Lexus GX sales. Toyota has no pressure to update their body on frame vehicles especially when such models are disappearing from other makers in favor of unibody SUVs.

Selling decent vs. selling 1/10 of its direct competitor is two entirely different things. BOF trucks are disappearing in the mid size segment only. Full size segement is alive and well with Armada/QX80, Tahoe/Escalade and Expedition/Navigator. 4Runner sells cause it’s the only game in town. Not because it’s great or anything. It’s a good truck and I won’t contest that.. but jeez it’s antique. Imagine how much better it’ll do it were updated. I’m not contradicting myself.. if you talk to any dealer in the northern states.. they really don’t carry that big an inventory in 4Runners cause they sit around. Gulf states it sells decent.

It’s corporate cousins sold here (GX) doesn’t really sell that well. They had a super aggressive lease program on the GX from Nov. to Jan where it was cheaper to get one of those than a IS350 (lease) and sales spiked a bit.

Prado was recently updated and that’s exactly what I was hoping for in the 4Runner.

You guys can knock the old v8 in the LC500 all you want, but its the favorite thing about the car of pretty much every reviewer that's reviewed it. Its one of the few hold outs that hasn't gone lower displacement turbo and people appreciate the old school approach and awesome soundtrack.

I don’t think anyone was knocking the V8 in the LC500. That’s an amazing motor for sure. Discussion was about LC in Land cruiser.

The LC is a global vehicle that does well in other parts of the world. They also have a very loyal following because of the body on frame design.

..he is going off of supposed US sales and his one friend in NY anyways...

..the ancient GX (27,000) outsold the QX80 (18,000), Escalade (23,000) and Navigator (10,000) in the US for 2017 on top of outselling them in the years prior..this is the same case when you look at 4Runner/Surf/Prado/LC sales in the US and around the world.

Not to mention it's the official car of NATO and is engineered for a 25 year life span. Some people just want shiny toys though and can't see the value in such a vehicle.

I was definitely knocking the motor in the LC500 (because it's old and it doesn't have enough power for that car IMO), but that's one of the reasons I have a new project so can't be too negative lol

467hp is barely decent for the 4000lb RC-F; 470hp for the 4500lb LC? No thanks, but I do understand the ethos of the car and that high power wasn't the aim.

I feel Lexus fumbled at the goalline on both the RCF and LC500. They may as well punted the lc500h haha. Kept telling myself, they were so close to dominating the market with both cars and they just said well this is good enough.
