MHD Failed Flash

I bought the WiFi Adapter for MHD a couple weeks ago and been waiting for a day were I had some spare time to flash a "Stage 1" map onto the car and take it for a bit of a drive. Today was that day, or at least I thought so.

Got everything set up and ready to go. Ignition on, phone in flight safe mode, connected to battery charger. Connected the adapter and read the DME codes to make sure it was connected properly before trying the flash, all good. Select the "Stage 1" 95 Oct map, no options. Start Long Write. Connects to ECU. Flash reaches 5% and... fails. "Unable to prepare memory section".

Try again.

Reaches 5% and fails.

Deploy typical IT approach and turn it off and on again.

Car won't start.

Faecal matter fills underwear.

Refer to MHD manual - "If flash fails, lock car and leave for 20 minutes then try again".

Locks car.

Alarm immediately goes off.

Get's back in car and tries to read error codes.

"DME Unreadable"

Faecal matter now overflows underwear and starts pooling in the footwell.

Hail mary move, let's flash it back to stock.

Passes 5%.

2 minutes 32 seconds later, flash completes.

Car restarts.

Engine starts.

Emotional moment of relief.

It's safe to say it's been a rollercoaster of a morning. Sent MHD an email explaining everything that happened along with the logs available from the app. Anyone on here had a similar experience or know what it could be?

My car is a 2019 so doesn't need to be unlocked.

Ran the unlock test on MHD just to double check and it said it unlock isn't required.

I'm glad my despair can provide some entertainment ?

Didn't buy new, it was second hand. Got it when it had 4K miles. I've not had it serviced by Toyota but the previous owner had the first service done with them. And the recall hasn't been done because I wanted to tune it without going through the extra hassle.

Are you connected to wifi with Bluetooth and cellular off? All apps closed out?

have you turned off your radio, make sure hood and doors are closed. Air conditioning is off. All items such as cameras and radar detectors are unplugged?

Id say there’s a slight chance that it’s a locked ecu then. Did you check the date on the ecu itself?

I usually can't flash if i freshly drove the car, sometimes i have to fully shut down the car and let it fully turn off and then make an attempt to reflash with succession. I call it the cool down period, the car turns completely off if i try flashing when i freshly drove the car, it's like MHD wants my DME to cool down before attempting a flash. Idk why, but it works for me soo idk what it is for you.


On that side note, i just flashed a revised E30 map from Fabian @ Pureboost last night! Boutta give it a shot today! ??

Yuuupp. If the car is ever serviced at Toyota, the ECU can/will be updated to whatever the latest version is at the time. The recall is not the only way that the firmware can be updated.

Yeah areoplane mode with just WiFi on.

I did indeed, ECU Build Date is 2019-06-11 based on the "Check Unlock Status" in MHD

The last time it was at Toyota was early 2020, I think February. Is there another date I should be checking apart from ECU build date?

I'm dealing with the exact same issue and working with MHD for a solution. Flash back to stock worked for me as well and made the car driveable again.
