Yep- I am one of the Moly acolytes. ;)
Bought back in mid 2020 on a Wednesday and was at the track that Sunday- Punted the warranty.
Base lines that Sunday and then been modding and adjusting since.
changed oil to liq Moly at 1500 and then every two months or so depending on events. At 16,000 miles of 80% track work. #knockingonwood

Committed to 2022 in Zupra but may sell this fall and look to a M2 crs- Got to drive a BMW M4 GT4 couple weeks ago and the allure/sounds/feel from a factory and purpose built race car is intoxicating
CS is great but M4GTS is more out there.

im sure for hard tracking purposes, the oil makes sense. Maybe it’s really just about needing more time to get up to temp at that viscosity. if you use the Oem spec oil in winter, perhaps just wait till then to monitor any noticeable change in the noise.
Yeah I’ll still be monitoring it. I looked at misfire counters in all cylinders and it looks great. Usually 1 random misfire in a drive cycle, but the misfire detector might not even be detecting an actual misfire, as I heard they’re super sensitive. So I don’t think it’s piston slap or any kind of knock, rod bearing failure, or anything super major as far as engine internals go.

If it’s the hydraulic lifters, no idea if its normal and even something to be concerned about.

Anyways, seems like others hear the same thing on their engines (if anyone could post a sound clip that would be awesome) that haven’t failed, so its comforting to know mine is just like the rest.

So it does seem I have a slight intermittent hydraulic lifter tick on cold starts. At least that’s what it sounds like to me.

Anyone know how this can be fixed? Is it because I’m using a thicker oil? Or am I just paranoid lol.

Pretty sure it’s not DI. I can hear all the injectors firing fast. This tick seems to be a single source, as if it was one lifter or something ticking. Maybe bad injector? When my car is off the jack stands and control arms are fixed, I will start it up and try and get a sound clip.

So I went back to OEM 0w20 oil. Here are two sound clips of a cold start. 38F weather with the revs going . I hear a tick, perhaps it’s normal?

Here’s a photo of the oil filter my shop tech sent me after my recent oil change. Nice and clean, no metal, so I for sure will sleep better now lol. Engine is just doing typical BMW cold start stuff.
