Slight sticking when trying to move from a stop?

Hi all,

Hoping this is in the right place for the forum and that it's nothing but wanted to get some feedback:

When I'm at a complete stop, put the car in reverse (it's an MT with 650 miles for context), and try to get moving, it sounds like the brakes are maybe sticking a bit? There's some resistance when letting out the clutch where it feels like the car is trying to overcome that resistance, and then it pops (not audibly) and then gets moving. I could be imagining this, but I think it seems like this happens less often when moving forward...or maybe I'm just giving it a bit more gas as I let the clutch out when I'm moving forward as opposed to when I'm reversing and being more careful.

Is this worth a trip to the dealership to have it checked out? I know it's not the parking brake because I'm being sure I disengage every time and it'll still sometimes have that initial resistance or slight sticking. Not sure what to think...it's my first MT car in a few years but can't remember my old MT cars doing this. Plus, it doesn't seem driveline related and seems like it's occurring around the brakes/wheels.

You're pretty much describing the hill start assist system. It's helping 'hold' the car in place for you to get the car moving, to help prevent the pedal shuffling. Especially with the lack of a traditional cable e-brake, it's definitely a QOL feature.

It's also a pretty recent thing in MT cars as well, so depending on your last experience with a MT it'll be pretty foreign for you.

You're pretty much describing the hill start assist system. It's helping 'hold' the car in place for you to get the car moving, to help prevent the pedal shuffling. Especially with the lack of a traditional cable e-brake, it's definitely a QOL feature.

I'm a bit embarrassed now. I just commented in the hill start assist thread a couple days ago and didn't even consider that'a what it could be. Thanks - it makes sense because it seemed to be something that I noticed most when I was parked at work on a slight decline facing a curb where I was particularly mindful of not letting the car roll forward and smack the front bumper/lip.

If it's like any of the other hillstart systems I've driven, the system comes on when you step firmly on the brakes, and should hold the car for a brief pause giving you time to shuffle over to the clutch & accel to start getting moving, or after a few seconds (of clutch in IIRC), the car should start to roll like a traditional manual.

Coming from somebody who grew up in San Francisco and it's infamous hills, hill start systems are a blessing when you're in a car that doesn't have a traditional cable e-brake.

This was on my 21 sti and absolutely hated it. Thankfully on the sti there was a way to turn it completely off and have it stay off.

Thanks for the input everyone. The times that this is most noticeable is when I'm going up my driveway which has a slight incline and I'm trying to fit it through the garage door opening and when I'm trying to reverse on an incline or decline...so I'd say it seems pretty safe to say it's the hill assist.

I noticed with the hill assist or even at a complete stop, just easing off the clutch with no gas…. The car will automate the gas and get you rolling until you get back on the gas pedal. Hopefully that makes sense. I’m now just getting used to it lol
