Toyota FT-1 concept & A90 Supra design dissected

Do you care if the next Supra has a "corporate image?"

  • No, as long as it looks good, I don't care if the rest of Toyota's line up is designed around it.

  • Yes, the Supra should be completely unique looking even among Toyota's fleet.

  • Don't care as long as the Supra is the "first" to get the design.

That's crazy, I would have assumed all locked down already too. I imagine lights and glass openings all locked though, as they'd be an external manufacturer?

Anyway, awesome news. More things to investigate.

Please pass on to put decent wheels on it. The latest mules with the Toyota centre caps look like a camry special.

the mules and GRMN race car are built off the same exact design; the production car is not. it is different and apparently enough to be noticeable, but that's all I have.
Is it 'facelift' different?

In tinkering with the facsia design maybe they will take into account a view expressed in auto blog comments about the front end of the car - I have seen several comparisons being made (complete with photos in a couple of instances) between the Supra nose and a hand-held dust buster....
I was thinking it looked like Z34 NISMO front end only reworked

Most stuff these days can be changed fairly easily, at least when it comes to panels and such... Just edit the model and produce the new version.

That said, not sure what the actual changes are, as I did not push for that information. I try to just listen and not be forceful with anything, especially given how far along everything is now.

what's your favorite line/curve on a90? mine might be the clamshell hood line on profile

edit: or the gundam looking panel underneath the fake door vent

edit: or the upsweep toward the front of side skirt.

edit: or the rear bumper pinch like the 86.

edit: or maybe the built in ducktail

edit: i like the nose a lot too. or how the middle between air dam and headlight flair out like kouki 86

edit: also like how they;ve incorporated bmw styling with the flair front side airdam then blends inward toward nose

I think my favorite view will be of the front and rear. The side could look better with less bulky mirrors and no panel gap from the fake door vents.

i also think the rear will be the best part on this car. im still not sold on the nose yet; maybe it will look better w/o the camo. :dunno:

The man behind the Supra gives us the lowdown on everything, even the Viper ACR-esque fender vents.

In person, the Supra is tiny, but with a muscular stanceā€”Tada actually notes that it has a shorter wheelbase than the 86, another car he masterminded. You also notice tons of cool aerodynamic components throughout the car, which here, are covered up with fake plastic vents.

There's a vent just under the headlight, which seems to direct air over the front wheels. Tada says this will be removable in the production car, "in case the user wants to make a racing version." Additionally, there's a vent just above the front wheel on the hood, that Tada says is there to increase downforce. To us, it looks like a smaller version of what you'd see on a Porsche 911 GT3 RS or a Dodge Viper ACR.

On the door, there's an upswept line that flows really smoothly into the rear fender. That's also a vent, one that Tada told us will help with brake cooling, and "maybe downforce too." There's a big diffuser, which is functional. And that double-bubble roof design isn't just a callback to Toyota's first inline-six sports car, the 2000GT; it helps get air to the integrated spoiler mounted on the hatchback trunk lid.

Tada noted that the Supra was designed with GTE racing in mind, as shown by the race-car concept we saw earlier this year, and all these aero devices will help make it competition-ready. You'll also notice that the Supra has a very small frontal area, and a wider rear, just like another car designed with GTE regulations in mind, the Ford GT. Tada wouldn't confirm where the Supra will race, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it in the World Endurance Championship. Possibly even the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as soon as next year.

I love the way the window line curves around the rear edge of the bonnet. with black A pillars, this will look really nice IMHO.

True and thatā€™s why I learned to live with it but thinking about possibly getting into an A90 with even worse visibility doesnā€™t sound fun or even an option for me. I guess iā€™ll Have to see after I test drive it.
Yeah.. auto only will never get me into this car. Hopefully Toyota learns that their customers are important and a supra buyer will definetly also buy something else from Toyota... so itā€™s just not about the bottom line of this car. Stupid
