Q&A: Andreas Ederer, Z4 product manager

Who buys the Z4?

The guy who has retired and treats himself; an early to mid thirties’ male with good earnings who wants to show off a bit; and the business woman in her mid thirties to forties.

Why are there no hybrids?

There hasn’t really been a discussion. From the beginning, it was clear we wre not going to do a 48V or 4WD for example. Maybe because we wanted to keep a little bit of heritage, the purest form. Those technologies are also expensive. As a company we want to earn money, we want to product products that our customers want to buy and will pay for. If we had 48V, we would have asked for a much higher price. In this difficult segment it don’t think it would be the way to go. So these ideas were excluded in the beginning.

Will the M40i be enough for Z4 M seekers?

I think so. Not so much the figures but the feel. A group of BMW product managers tried it at Escari track near Malaga. They got out and said we should call this a pure M. The need for an M is not really there.

Did you consider other names for the Z4?

It started development named as the Z4. Then we read about ‘Z5’ in the media, and we discussed it. But even numbers are reserved for more emotional progressive concepts so Z4 makes sense.

How closely have you worked with Toyota?

We developed the car for Toyota. The two cars share a platform. Obviously we come across elements where we say, ‘can we use the same part here and there?’. How far can we go in order to find synergies? One will see some of the same parts on both. But we’ve never compared designs of the two.

Seeing as a base 230i AT weighs 3411 and a base 240i AT weighs 3519 = 110 lbs between 4 and 6 cylinder versions.

Z4 M40i should be about 3400 lbs.

Supra should be less (3200 or so) since it doesn't need to be bulked up and have all the extra bracing that a convertible will need.

We’ll be lucky if the Supra is 3,300 pounds. There should only be about 100 pound difference give or take. It’s not as simple as reducing the weight of the roof.

There is a 271lb difference between Coupe and convertible versions of the 2 series of the same engine/model. So I would def say there is room to make It to 3200 or less for the Supra. A lot more bracing and such is required for a convertible chassis to give it the rigidity of a coupe chassis, all the weight isn't in the mechanical rag top.

People will believe what they want to believe :p
I'm sure even when they come out with official numbers people will find other ways to question and hate on the specs.

The car will be ~1400kg/~3080lbs.

Go back a few months and look up the article that talks about the new roof on the z4, the whole thing with the mother was only like 200lbs give or take. On that end Toyota claims they have made the Supra even more rigid than the z4 so the end results won’t be far off. You’ll see.

Yeah.. I think maybe a 100lbs difference. Not the 200-300lbs difference that people are hoping for. And this will probably be one of the last spec they reveal just like what we are seeing with the Z4. Just like everything else being middle of the ground with this car.. I don’t see this being any different.

It will already naturally be more rigid than a z4 due to it having A,B,C pillars and a roof......

So are you saying that’s what Toyota meant by more of rigid and a more focused sports car than a z4? So the only difference is coupe vs convertible? I’ve been kind of saying that for awhile now but people didn’t like that version lol.

Btw, all of that has weight to it, that’s where the difference starts to narrow between the two. Let’s not forget that a hatch adds extra weight a convertible doesn’t have. This is not a convertible to trunk comparison, it’s a convertible to hatch.

This is the first time I heard of this new B46. All the media assumed it was going to be the B48. Anyone has more info?

I’m actually more excited about the 4 cylinder, it’s faster or as fast as the A80 stock for stock and the lighter option. Since this won’t match the A80 in total potential the 4 cylinder may be the way to go with this "Supra".
