I really don`t even understand how people can follow the break in thing. Every performance car I ever owned I was so excited to floor it to redline leaving dealership. Having to wait a entire month (or longer) to floor a brand new car I just crazy to me.

Break in procedures are funny. Dont people know these cars go on a dyno before leaving the factory? They do a whole drive cycle that includes full throttle stuff....
This is so trueā€¦ Still have my original 2016 ND MX5 that I started tracking right out of the box. That car and engine is solid as hell. Only 7000 miles currently on this 2022 Supra and I hit the track immediately. Iā€™m really enjoying the cars Iā€™ve owned. But nothing wrong with babying a car for a while if that floats your boatā€¦. Slap a mask šŸ˜· on if it makes you feel better. Different strokes for different folks. Itā€™s all good šŸ˜‰

For those enduring the long break in period and doing it by the book like I did - I hit the 1200 mile mark last night on the way home from work. Tldr: was worth the wait.

Oh. My. God. So after some moron sped by me at like 20 over the limit and then we were sitting at the same light anyway (dumbass kept speeding until he had to stop too), I had to motivation i needed to give the Supra its first rip beyond 4000 rpm at 1205 miles. The light turned green and that clown was left in the dust....I was literally laughing and clapping by the time I hit the 55mph speed limit because it was so epic. An eternity later, that same asshole that was so determined to speed past me and waste gas and be reckless just to beat me to the light in his Acura SUV passed me again going like 70, crapping all over the speed limit that I was driving again. Good for him but I just waved and smiled. People seem to drive like assholes more around the Supra than other cars I've had.

Bonus was I had the car in sport mode for the first time other than to just hear what the exhaust sounds like - I didn't mean to launch it and really didn't but holy effing crap it ripped off the line with a level of thrust I wasn't expecting by just letting the clutch out somewhat quickly around 1500rpm and gassing it. The sport mode feels like it really made a difference from a stop. I could just be imagining that because I haven't used it and also haven't done anything but take off with a slow and "normal" clutch release.

Second tldr; fully followed break in and never used sport mode to actually see what it does besides hear the exhaust. Got used to not passing 4000 rpm and then realized the car had a whole other personality that made me soil myself. I realized I was likely no where near peak horsepower at 4k but wow even going to 6K is night and day.

Sounds like your power level is over 9000

This thing is controlled entirely by computers. If the manufacturer was really concerned about engine break-in, why wouldn't they just electronically control the engine to 4500 rpms and disable the sport mode button until 1200 miles?
I'm about to take delivery of my Supra this week so I'm reading through all the threads about new ownership etc. and I have to say the profile picture you have is epic! what was the cause of the air time you got coming around that corner and any damage as a result?

I just rolled 1200 miles with my MT and it seems like the ECU is doing less torque limiting around torque peak. If the MFG is doing any power limiting its definitely just a peak torque limiter down low in the RPM where the stresses on the motor are really high.

I have a pretty involved background in motorsport tuning with Motec/Emtron ecu logic/programming and I cannot imagine the manufactures actually gimping their bosch ecu cars aggressively with a low limiter or function disable... I would say if anything the adaptive nature of the modern ECU's are tuned heavily away from the known limits on install (knock/timing advance/vvt ect) and the ecu is slowly learning the optimal trims for those values which is what gives us that "feeling" of having more power than as delivered over time.

did it for 500 km then floored it lol.
I canā€™t imagine doing more than that. Iā€™ve only seen straight from crate or manufacturer to track. Whatever makes people feel comfortable. It surely canā€˜t hurt to baby your vehicle for as long as you like šŸ˜Š

If youā€™re picking up the car from another state several hours away and the car is new, would just varying the load and taking breaks work or how would you handle the break in method?

Correct, what I did was for example do a few minutes/miles at 50mph, few mins at 60mph, and few at 70mph. Then do the same again, but staying at same speed for a while and this time switching gears between 4th 5th and 6th to vary rpms (assuming you're MT) same goes for AT but easier and you have more gears and shorter ratios.
Very important: do not go up a hill in a high gear and give it full gas/load from low rpm (<3k) that is not ideal.

Assuming my car arrives in one piece Iā€™ll be doing this sometime in the next couple of months (I hope). Iā€™ll have over 600 miles to drive. For the first 100 I plan on drastically reducing my speed and possibly even getting off the highway every 10 minutes or so to try to vary the load on the engine. After that Iā€™ll vary my speed less, but still try get off the highway and back on every 30 minutes or so.

Itā€™s going to be annoying. Especially since itā€™ll be on i80 in Nebraska, but worth the extra precaution IMO.

I also plan on putting temporary paint protection film on the entire hood, bumper, fenders, headlights, and a pillars. Once I get home Iā€™ll be doing a full decontamination and pain correction before dropping the car off for PPF.

Alan, this is a BMW engine that has been proven to be one of the most reliable straight 6 motors ever.
Drive it like you stole it.... She won't let you down.

Peace

I had over 800 miles to drive when I picked my car up. I just drove it like I would any other car. If I wanted to get on it, I did. With that also being said, I only had it close to redline maybe once or twice in the first 1200 miles then had the oil changed. Switching between sport and normal mode on interstate driving is mainly what I did (I'm AT so if your MT let the feet do most of the work.)
