Honestly I am surprised at some of these quotes from so called car enthusiasts, SupraUK, you are so wrong factually on so many fronts. For starters "you need to be a midget to fit in an MX5", well I'm nearly 6ft and 13 stone and easily fit into the mx5, granted if your 6 ft 2+ and 20 stone you might struggle

"Yes MX5 and GR86 are available here, not very popular, you usually just see the old ones driven around by lunatic chavs with bumpers hanging off leaving a trail of rust as they drive by." - Really.. GR86 did nt even come out until 2022. Mazdas came out in the late 80's and 90's and its testament to their popularity tht many of these are still on the road in the hands of enthusiasts

The GR86 has had amazing reviews and the UK allocation was sold out within an hour or so of it being released. Many GR86 still go for over list price and are highly sought after, so much so Toyota UK have managed to secure another batch which are invites only. Likewise the MX5 is the most popular 2 seater sports car in the UK and has a huge following.

Its very light weight, around 1000kg, very nimble and can dart around the twisties like few other sports cars. The 188bhp engine sings sweet, manual gearbox and for a light car provides plenty of power. If still in doubt your find nearly all reviews for it are excellent Topgear review, Autocar. In this weeks Autocar your find a group test of an MX5, M2 coupe and Civic Type R which in itself shows its in the mix and your find the MX5 comes out joint top with the M2 and highly praised which says it all.

"They're such a different inferior league of cars." having had both a supra and and top of range mx5, the interior of an mx5 matches that of the Supra, the build quality is also excellent. see typical example MX5 GT Sport Tech

The Abarth 124 spider was discontinued as it hardly made any sales and did not make a profit for FIAT and people prefered its better looking brother the MX5.

Just because one car costs more than another, does not necessary make the lower priced car inferior, you normally get that snobby uneducated attitude from premium brands owners eg Porsche, JLR, etc not from Toyota Supra owners !! Live and let live is my motto and be happy theres such a wide range of sports cars out there to choose from.

Craig thanks for your message.

I'll just add a bit of meat on the bone as I appreciate my previous comment on Mx5 and GR86 lacked context the way I wrote it, entirely my fault for rushing it, mea culpa.

GR86: I am one of biggest fans of this car. I was actually waiting for this car for ages, and was nearly 1st in UK to own one, until I decided to change to the Supra MT ?

The whole piece I wrote on loonie chavs is specifically directed to old Mx5s, not GR86, it's my fault for the way I grammatically wrote it.

I was answering the other person in a general way to say something on the lines of "yes we do have small sports cars here in the UK too" but I totally wrote that incoherently.

Never the less, I wholeheartedly stand by what I wrote about old Mx5s specifically, reason being, similarly to how your opinion of the word "inferior" differs from mine, which is absolutely fine, is the same reason you are calling them 'car enthusiasts', when I see them as people that can't afford a proper car, so they buy a banged up rusty Mx5, just so they can tell people on their instagram that they have a "sports car" or a 'project', to cater to their fragile identity.
Thereafter, they commonly proceed to sabotage every single car meeting in the UK with loud, obnoxious sh!t boxes, and shut down shows ruining the car scene for everyone else (obviously, this comment is not reserved to Mx5s only, but to a vast multitude of cars) however, due to the very small financial implication of owning a rusty Mx5, it tends to attract a certain type of people, let's say.

Now, the new MX5s, are actually very nice! Especially those dark red ones, beautiful paint, and have grown in size, just like the Mini has; but to me, yes they are cramped (I'm 6'1: normal build), but again, you might feel like it's not - de gustibus non disputandum est.

Finally, I can also tell you that I would not define myself as a 'car enthusiast at all', I simply own cars that I like, but this doesn't mean I must be generically labelled as a 'car enthusiast' - in summary, this should now hopefully give you assurance and peace of mind that you no longer need to be associated with an uneducated snob anymore ?
Just remember, and this is coming from someone uneducated, as you described me: "Forum" is a latin word, and used to be an outdoor public place of debate and discussion, so it is perfectly expected to not have a homogeneous spread of opinions, but rather a vibrant diversity of ideas, backgrounds and interests ? ?

I would say that if the car market readjusts back to pre-covid then all car prices are going to tank making any car look poor value. (Perhaps you are witnessing the start with Supra’s sat not selling)

So, the question for me would be…. should I be buying an expensive car right now?
And my guess would be maybe not, especially if you are a cash buyer.

Is the Supra worth it? Only you can answer that question as one persons ‘value’ reasoning can vary dramatically to the next.

it seems to me you are pretty unimpressed with the HP and if I was you I would 110% walk away from any Supra purchase as the lack of power that’s niggling at you now will only get worse.

I would move on!

Haha, if anything this has at least livened up the Uk forum !! As already mentioned i'm not impressed paying 60k for a model below the current USA spec especially when that engine exists is in a BMW in the Uk, so voids the emissions reasonaing first used by Toyota. Toyota UK could pull their finger out and bring over the latest spec if they wanted, they cant be arsed tho.

However am happy to look out for a less than a year old one for 15k less when one comes up in red, its just a waiting game, theres already a yellow one at 44k so it wont be far away :)

I appreciate what your saying but dont agree with a lot of it, not quite sure why adding in a bit of googled Latin words adds gravity or extrc credence to the argument either !! I would also say if you join a car forum, go to car shows and have a supra are a car enthusiast - maybe one in denial!

I personally think that its great that people who can not afford a Supra etc or even those that can, have the opportunity to buy a low cost sports car which an MX5 is. I for one just a few years ago had a 1990 Mazda MX5 BBR Turbo. It was a one owner car, 8k miles on it had been lowered and had around 150bhp as opposed to 100bhp of the mornal model.

It was a great car and I done loads of work on it and it got me into sports cars at an entry level, selling it a few years later and got a VX200 Turbo and then onwards and upwards.

As for loud obnoxious boxes, you should hear my Ford Focus RS with Mountune 375 and exhaust at full clatter, we definetely won't be going to the same car shows together

Nice VX, seeing one of those on the road is almost as rare as seeing a Supra.

Thanks, girlfriend hated it, no carpets, very basic and I used to get road dust and grit come through the cabin air vents as there was no filter, great fun though and fast, 0-60 in something like 4.7 secs back in 2005 and mid engined too.

Sounds like a blast, literally.
I remember watching the Top Gear episode featuring it ?

My renewal has just come through and it is £570 for the year.

It's because the base petrol car tax goes up each year and is now £180. Then for 5 years we pay an extra £390 because the list price of the car was over £40,000.

As mine was registered in 2019, I still have another year to go before it drops to the base amount per year.

Yup. Just been hit with this after buying my Yellow 3.0 GR Pro a couple of days ago: an ex-demo with 500miles on it for £47K. Plus, my insurance has doubled (from MX5 30AE) to £1K. And my MPG has halved. Boo Hoo.

@JohnnySix I got my Supra back in March, also yellow. It had just over 500 miles. Also ex-demo (they had two, so this one was barely used), same price :D Best purchase ever!
