Recently started to notice an issue with the power steering system/steering feedback. Over the past few days, I have noticed something that feels like a detent or the lane keep assist kicking in while the steering wheel is on center. It almost feels like the electric power steering is mistakenly moving the wheel slightly. I have had the dealership do an alignment on the car, along with checking tire wear and wheel balance, with no luck fixing the issue. I have tried completely disabling the traction control and the safety systems, with no change. The issue seems to be happening more frequently and dramatically as time goes on, however, it's still a very subtle problem/something I typically only notice when driving at highway speeds in a straight line and on smooth pavement.

I'm going to make a separate issue thread, but in the same timeframe, I have also started noticing the speaker is constantly producing a very high-pitched continuous tone even when the volume is turned all the way down or muted. Just wanted to throw that in here in case there is some shared electrical issue of some kind. Has anybody else seen anything like this?

Bringing this thread back from the dead. I’m fairly new to this platform, but I am also noticing this detent at the center point of the wheel travel. Did you ever figure this out?

Haven't been able to fix it. Went as far as replacing the the power steering rack and still does it. Mostly happens when the weather/car is hot. Still really hard to tell if it's mechanical or electrical.

Interesting, I think the next step for me will be an alignment. The previous owner installed HKS lowering springs, but I’m not sure if he ever did an alignment. Car tracks perfectly straight, but that detent is very noticeable on the freeway.

Same, I have noticed “buggy” steering, where it feels to assist extra or actuate faster than expected with the same input. Only happens when its HOT, 85 or above.

you could be experiencing a calibration issue with the ADAS system iF the car is lowered or ride height is modified in anyway, a wheel alignment and SAS calibration wont resolve issues related to ADAS, these errors could be intermittent. also YAW angle couls be out of spec too,

@soupa_slo you and me both brother, hoping someone knows what the issue is
i'm bringing it to the dealer tomorrow to see what they say, i think the steering angle position sensor needs to be recalibrated. I'm on bags so they will give me a hard time with warranty but i'll atleast hear them out

Please let me know if this fixes your issue, I have thought about bringing it into the dealership but I'm worried they'll give me a hard time.

Thanks!

I have been doing some toe adjustment and it has helped a little bit but I can't shake off the random lightness in the wheel. I think a tie rod end kit (bumpsteer kit) will help alleviate some weird feelings but still looking for a fix. Also it seems like someone on the bmw forums wrote up the issue (with no solution) but it seems similar to our issue.
