i think the prototype nails it with the rear and side profile. but a lot of people are having a hard time seeing FT1 from the front of the mule.
Not surprised if the production front end deviates the most from the FT1. The FT1 front end was probably the most 'conceptual' part of the car and it's also the part that was most subject to changes - for engineering reasons (airflow) and safety regulation reasons.

for me its not even so much the nose. other elements that i like about the concept is the see through hood, front fender air vents, and mirrors. i still hope they manage to incorporate those design elements some how. im also glad to see that there aren't any fans like on the concept. i always thought those looked odd and out of place; almost like they were an afterthought.

afterthought?...plenty of people feel that those were part of the highlights of the concept..seesh..-.-...reading people's posts on aesthetics is as bad as reading politics..

the only objective thing to discuss is how watered down this will be because I too really love the FT1 front end, vents, clear hood, etc...all the styling elements, even the side intakes, have all been accomplished in other road cars so it wouldn't be farfetched to think Toyota could come out with a production car with many, if not most of these elements..

Obviously looks are subjective. When talking with Supra owners at meets and online forums the nose is kinda 50/50. Maybe the prototype is a good common ground compromise. Now moving onto the fans; I can't say I'm a huge fan (no pun intended). But either way it isn't a deal breaking for me. I think we will see vents on the fenders. The prototype has really bulky fenders, so this lends me to believe there is a faux panel over the whole thing to disguise the true design. With the see though hood, maybe not for the base model, but it should be a must have for a flagship trim level/high performance model. Lastly the mirrors, I hate the BMW door mounted mirrors. I want them to stay true to the concept, but if push comes to shove I would rather Toyota stick on IS/RC mirrors.

the mirrors are indeed a disappointment..on some cars, sure, it can work since it won't impede on the body lines but in many cases it looks like blatant cost cutting..i thought we would see body mounted mirrors at the very least. And it isn't like BMW doesn't make cars with them, the i8 has them

here's a list of the biggest design cues:
  • the nose which includes the body lines which start from the ends of the windshield - maybe toned down
  • split grill - no?
  • fender vents - ?
  • headlights connecting into the brake vents - ?
  • clear hood - ?
  • pagoda roof - yes
  • body mounted mirrors - no
  • rear fender vents - ?
  • taillights connecting into the rear brake vents - ?
  • retractable wing - ?
  • ducktail - yes
  • exhaust pipes disconnected from the diffuser - no

^ I remember watching the TV series Viper when I was a kid. Man I use to love that show and car lol. I think the FT-1 does resemble it a bit but in a more modern JDM way.

the viper is gorgeous but the FT1 proportions, let alone the BMW mule's proportions, aren't close. part of what gives the FT1 its beauty is the slightly shorter hood and longer body which was due to the 2+2 layout but since this is now a 2 seater that tries to cram the same styling cues it ends up looking so tall..the viper looks so much longer and lower overall. as a comparison there aren't any JDM cars that have viper-ish proportions especially since it is considered blasphemous to have such inefficient packaging for the japanese brands...the FD RX7 is the closest but it still doesn't compare especially when the S2000 had the longest hood to body ratio out of all JDM cars since the 80s.

The FT1 design was also intentionally scaled up to be something like 20% bigger to have make more of an impressions at auto shows and appearances. Having more room to work with no doubt allowed the designers to give the concept a sportier greenhouse-to-length ratio. When it comes to actual production car though, practical concerns come into play like you mentioned.

yes, we all know how big the FT1 is but Toyota then should have designed a concept around a 2 seater, not tease us with a gorgeous 2+2 only to just become a crammed bodykit on a roadster with a roof...when you look at the LC 500 from concept to production, the overall height and proportions ended up staying pretty true to the original design.

Some new renders I found browsing through instagram

it is an ok render but with most of the renders on this forum they don't match the mule's proportions and none of them match the ft1's beauty

Why do I feel that I am going to be underwhelmed once the actual car comes out? Like the above poster said .... all these renders are wish lists.

Also .... which model will be brought to production 1st? The 4 banger? Then I have to wait another year or 2 for the more powerful version.

Getting impatient.

Hopefully not. Toyota's recent track record when it comes to bringing concept styling to production car has been pretty good IMO.

The production Lexus LC stayed very faithful to the concept car and the production FR-S stayed pretty close to the concept also.

well right because Toyota has had a direct decision making on their sports cars but this is different...this the the bavarians taking their product and molding it to what they think is Toyota's taste. has anyone seen a single person from japan sit in the "supra" mules? very authentic stuff

plus when you ask for a design that is built around the traditional supra layout and then try to graft it onto a roadster with a roof (from an entirely different company) what could the result be otherwise...at least subie and toyota had one clear goal

...and regarding toyota's last few concept sports cars for the ISF, LFA, 86 & LC, the production variants have all looked better than the concepts
