Well it looks like Papadakis has now started making some parts for it and he is inching closer and closer to the end goal. I mentioned in the other thread that they may use an air to air intercooler and delete the OEM water to air system and that's the path they are taking. The are designing a new intake manifold since the B58 has an integrated W2A system. I can't wait to see the end result and maybe the "but it's a BMW engine" people will open their eyes a little bit. I am also coming from the perspective of owning high hp MK4's so this is not a biased opinion. Enjoy the video!

It will be interesting to see how this build comes out and I am in the process of trying to decide on a Pure 700 upgrade or just go with an aftermarket turbo upgrade. Yes the Pure is a direct bolt on but it's priced at $2400 which would be more than a brand new Garrett G30-770 or Borg Warner EFR 9280 at $2000. I could make that manifold in a couple of hours too.

I believe what Tada has said is that the car has been tested to hold up to 700hp or something along those lines.

I can specifically name at least one; the others I don't recall names, since much of that dialog was contained in threads that got deleted and/or heavily 'moderated' several months ago. I believe there is a (or at least was - as this person has a tendency to strategically delete posts) relatively recent comment to that effect in the first teardown video thread..

Hm... I recall some saying 700-800 being possible, but I will have to see for myself.

I agree with you. 1000hp is very unrealistic, at least for anything that would last more than 100 miles.

egh, 650-700whp if you're beating on it/tracking it (—I think this is more you Ryley), but I had a few friends at 8-900whp for a few years as highway cars (no issues).

eventually they will let go, but they are pretty incredible that way.


now, that said, I've heard that number is lessening due to newer turbos and e85. Larry from SP said they're bending stock rods now at around 750whp. crazy...

in any case, always a good idea to build an engine before it blows a hole in the block, crankwalks, etc. I've never done billet mains on any of my JZs though (mine range from 6-800whp, both built) and would really only suggest that for those doing ~1kwhp+. Everything else though...

Now is the bending today due to increased low end torque?

Exactly. More torque, more instant, and sooner in the powerband.

So, in that light, the B58 may already be every bit as stout in stock form even if it starts having issues around that same level as it makes power in a similar fashion.



The older JZ setups had less of an issue due to the difference in power delivery.

Assuming a good ECU, tune and fuel the general guideline for a happy stock bottom end 2J is keeping the revs at 8000RPM max and <700WTQ, regardless of the WHP it puts out. Ethanol fuel and turbo tech has resulted in a lot of windowed blocks these days due to the massive difference in TQ delivery down low.

yeah, driveline stuff breaking is always a function of tq, but that said for a long time the relationship between whp and tq was generally a stable one (hence I forget to clarify, and I see a lot of others doing the same). these days though, perhaps not so much especially given where it's coming on in the powerband.

that said, that wtq figure sounds about right.

Yes, that's probably the biggest factor I'm seeing these days - newer turbo tech and E85. I'm a little worried about my rods with 23psi at 3400rpm haha, and I haven't even put E85 in yet.

The other trick to keeping them happy is ramp the boost and timing, so it's quite soft around peak torque but then cranks in at higher rpm. You keep the bottom end safe, but you get the power figure.... but that shape of torque/power curve isn't for me - but each to their own.
