yea, modern BMW engines are a bit of an eyesore. They do get better with a manifold and some re-routing of things, but still a mess:

It definitely has three main reasons for being there, and they are as follows (in order of importance):

1. Noise suppression
2. Thermal management, purposely trapping more heat for encapsulation system, and shedding less heat into overall compartment space.
3. Cosmetics
