Subaru will take whatever they're given, Toyota owns a piece of them, its not a real collaboration like with BMW lol. The BRZ is the must un Subaru car they've ever made. So much so, they had to change their company logo to sell it ("The Beauty of All Wheel Drive").

I digress though as even a 2+2 Supra MKIV isnā€™t the most ideal everyday passenger hauler beyond one extra person.
Truth. The mk2 Supra is where its at. I wish someone would make another car as utterly usable and enjoyable as they were. I DDed them for 20 years. Only stopped due to parts supply. Had to switched to a 2wd 1st gen Tacoma with a canopy to find something that had a stick, was rwd and at least as useful as the mk2 was. Its reasonably entertaining to drive, but its no sports car. I'd get a GT86 if it was a real hatch back.

With all the GR integration happening in North America, what's happening to TRD? Will it be slowly phased out? Not that I'll shed a tear for them, but just curious.

I love the MK2/A60 Supras. Iā€™ve never owned one but always admired their looks and curb weight. Swapping a totally stock 2JZ-GE into one always struck me as a perfect combination.

Honestly the modern equivalent of that usable sportscar paradigm from Toyota is the GT86. Very practical and usable as a DD. When I was out looking at the first FR-Sā€™s the rear seat and trunk area in them really compared well against my old Prelude 5th gen. Practical advantages of the last Prelude aside the Toyobarus are everything that Honda *should* have been fifteen years earlier.

Even those 2WD manual Tacomas are getting harder to find now (unless Toyota has stopped selling manual versions already).

egh lol, doesn't get much lighter than 27-2800lbs for a car of that size. It was actually amazing the 86 weighed that given the same size cars in the 90s weighed about the same (S-chassis etc).


Corolla GR4 may actually slot in above the GR86 (Yaris GR4 is $40k), at least price wise, but we will have to wait and see :)
It was definitely a revelation for the 86/BRZ to come in at about 2800lbs as a modern offering. I recall that during its design the pre-D4-S FA20 engine actually only put out about 160-170hp. It took Toyota and Subaru working it over (with the D4-S system) to get it up to 200hp and 156 ft-lbs. But I think there was an early spec Japanese model with slightly less displacement and power? Correct me if Iā€™m wrong about that.

The Corolla GR-4 probably being around $40k would be understandable. It will go up against the WRX STI and Golf R after all. So long as it comes here and is another attainable special model that we donā€™t have to wait 25 years to be allowed to buy and also stockpile spare parts for itā€™s fine however Toyota wants to position it in their lineup : )

Also, I can dream: if the Mark X IR-V (performance model) is ever brought back for Japan I *wish* we in the U.S. could finally get that too. The FWD V6 TRD Camry just doesnā€™t cut it.

It's a decent ways off (longer than I'd want to wait if I was considering a new vehicle right now).
Is the current gen 86/BRZ going to have a roughly 10 year life cycle?

I feel that the article by Autocar might just be a regurgitation of the rumours we've already heard of some time ago. I hope that's not the case.

The current RWD TNGA platforms are designed for much bigger and heavier cars than the 86/BRZ, unless Toyota and Subaru are willing to dump in the big bucks and to develop a RWD TNGA platform for smaller, lighter and sportier cars. I really don't want the 86/BRZ to end up like the 350Z and 370Z.

TNGA is a modular platform as is subaru's SGP platform. So the platform is like a lego set in the bag ready to be assembled. The pieces of SGP are mainly focused on having awd, boxer engines and electrification. TNGA is a bit more flexible as it has more pieces ready to accomondate awd,rwd,fwd,electrification. Also daihatsu have a modular platform that is an offspin of TNGA on smaller cars. TNGA can be modded to be a little bit smaller(and lighter) for sure , but the real question here is if the platform can handle a boxer engine. Or the other way around if SGP can handle rwd.

Yup, I'm aware. The GT86 is tempting as a modern replacement for the mk2 Supra. They are a very similar size and weight, and now there are 2jz swap kits, so there's no reason one couldn't swap the vvti 2jzge into one, that would give you something close to a modern mk2 Supra. Just wish it was a hatch! I've literally used my mk2s to carry 1uzs, 7mgtes, 55" televisions, slept 2 people in the back of them etc.

And yes, a mk2 Supra with a 2jzge is a super fun combo.

Yeah those 1st gen 2wd tacos are super hard to find in Canada, they sold very few here. Took me about 5 months to find mine.

Hoping the 2nd gen GT86 is a hatchback!

I love the look of the current car but the 86 Shooting Brake concept was excellent! I also recall at the time of the car's launch that Toyota was open to that, the one-off shelved 86 convertible concept and a possible sedan variant that would probably echo the 1998-2005 Altezza/IS.

If they can manage to make a good looking shooting brake, sure! There is still a stigma around wagons though so I think a hatchback would far more likely. Kinda surprised they didn't do it in the first place, the AE86 HB is by far the better known version (its coupe version is even better looking imo though).
