Hi,

I am doing some experiments with the Intake, I bought the MST CAI and it sounds great, however what I see is that there is an increse in the IAT. With the stock air box was about 85°F driving and 95°F at a stop on idle. Now with the CAI is about 95°F driving and up to 110°F on idle... at 65° ambient temp both cases.

For all the people logging, could you please post your IAT and ambient temperatures to compare please?

Does the box make have a good seal? I saw a picture or two that looked kinda questionable where air may get in from the engine compartment.

What’re you using to log with?
I am using BootMod3, since it's the tool I use for the Tune. There is also MHD and JB4 I think.

Does the box make have a good seal? I saw a picture or two that looked kinda questionable where air may get in from the engine compartment.
It's ok, however I went further and insulated everything:

And I got the results. I did the same route, tried to drive as similar as possible, starting above 100°F IAT:

Sorry for mixing units, ambient temp was 10~11 °C (about 50 °F), and IAT are in Fahrenheit. So it seems that the Stock Airbox is doing a great job for temperature. I tried to do the best I could to have the most similar results, but sometimes a red light or a car could change it. Still I think it's pretty conclusive, so I kept the stock Airbox, I may sell the MST.

It's a great product, sounds awesome but really I rather prefer low IAT than sound.

I wonder if the beautiful but ridiculously expensive Eventuri intake would be much better. I would think not worse but I wonder if any better (looks notwithstanding of course).

for my stand my logs say that with the MST at WOT the IAT drop a little more than with the stock one... didn’t do any logs at idle, honestly is not that important :)

Does the stock ecu or mhd or bm3 have IAT vs Ignition compensation tables?
Yes both can adjust ignition timing.

Basically the higher the IAT, the less ignition The ecu runs. Are they adjustable as well?
You are partially correct. Meaning what you said is only true after a certain temp set by the ECU, thats why i asked for a log during a pull.

You will notice that if temps are in the 90s the ECU will not pull timing. It will do so if temps are in the 130s

In OP's case, i highly doubt the intake is causing any power reduction. If anything the car will be making more power due to the higher air flow.

Came here to post about this, glad I came across it I just did some investigating myself with data logs using MHD. Car is catless downpipe, MHD Stg 2 E30 OTS tune. Data speaks for itself, I'm going to eventually add/apply more heat shielding to back of SRD heat shield to try and help as well, maybe to piping too.

These logs were done during a pull on the highway, 3rd-5th in sport mode.

First I logged with stock airbox. Here is link to whole log, go to third/last log - this was taken on the highway. I attached ambient temps as well. Peak charge temps-312*. Peak IAT 126*.

Then I installed the SRD Intake and did a pull as well. Of course ambient temps rose a bit but still huge difference/rise. Here is a link to the log, go to third/last log - also taken on highway. Peak charge temp-370*. Peak IAT-142*.

Actually on the same logs I have some pulls, if we plot vehicle speed and IAT we can see that,

For the Stock Airbox, in the last pulls I was able to get down to 72.9 °F:

And with the CAI the lowest I was able to get the IAT down on the last pulls was 78.55 °F:

So even in the pulls it gets lower temperature. As for power I don't know, I may need to bring the car to the dyno to know for sure, because this is only temperature.

That heatshield is making a huge the difference IMO, I will order one before selling the MST just to test again. Also I am not sure if using the reflective insulation is really helping, here my logic:

The insulator will reflect the high radiance from the turbo and the downpipe to some degree, but, once the temperature arose in the filter area, the insulator will keep the filter area warm, since that is its function, so I don't know, maybe someone with a better understanding of thermodynamics could explain better, my expertise is on programming, not physics, but I think a heatshield like the stock one or the aftermarket from Verus would make a real difference, it will reflect the radiance and keep it in the turbo area and it won't keep the temp in the filter area, since is not really an insulator like the reflective one.

Feel free to comment. Thanks @TreyE for the data points, so your info confirm that using a CAI, by itself will increase the IAT, but a CAI plus a heatshield will keep it down even better than stock. I'll order one and repeat the experiments once more. As for power I'll try to schedule some runs next month.

It could be, the MST had a dyno sheet. I'll wait for the heatshield to install it again. I know that 7 degrees aren't that much, but this was at 10°C not the 34°C of the summer, let's see.
