Without ports added, the bass exhaust energy was literally trapped behind the rear panel which created quite of bit of vibrational noise and also muddied bass response...

Adding exhaust ports to the rear panel, along with lining the enclosure walls with wadding, essentially lowered the Q (or damping effects) and resulted in a flatter / clearer bass response... The bass is now deeper, punchier, and far less distorted and eliminated much of the vibrational noise heard....

There are 3 main aspects to this project:

• The metal walls of the sub enclosures are lined with batting / wadding
• Foam insulation applied between enclosure and narrow rear panel
• Exhaust ports added to rear panel

I think what you'll find is that after doing these improvements the OE Harmon Kardon subwoofers are actually quite good...

Side note: The volume of exhaust air released during deep bass sections of music is quite impressive!

It could be the photo but are those mirror covers matte finish? I can't see the gloss if otherwise.

Matte finish to match the AMS anti-wind buffeting.
