The NYC Department of Transportation recently released its Q3 2025 Serious Injury Response, Tracking & Analysis (SIRTA) Report .
The report analyzed 1,021 serious injury accidents, including 80 fatalities and 941 severe injuries.

đźš—Here are some key takeaways from the report:

Top 3 types of collisions:
  1. Persestrian From Straight Vehicle Action — 13.1%.
  2. Rear End — 9.9%.
  3. Bicyclists From Turning Vehicle Action — 8.6%.

Top 3 Vehicle Contributing Factors:
  1. Driver Inattention/Distractuon — 30.9%.
  2. Failure To Yield Right-Of-Way — 16.1%.
  3. Unsafe speed — 12%.

In busy cities like New York, reckless or impatient behavior from drivers and pedestrians is one of the main causes of accidents. Some drivers shared their experiences:

“Even just drive around Manhattan or Brooklyn, it’s like a free-for-all. People flying at 100 mph, weaving through lanes, honking like crazy..."

"NYC drivers are very inconsiderate and will cut you off and then honk at you."

"People going 50mph down a lane of traffic just because it's empty."

These behaviors often lead to rear-end collisions.

Pedestrians aren’t completely blameless either—"Even pedestrians who take the "all the cars will stop for me" gamble and walk across an intersection."

If you often drive in busy cities like New York, we’d love to hear your real-world driving stories.

Have you experienced close calls, minor accidents, or tricky traffic situations? What habits or tips help you stay safe in high-traffic areas?

Driving in crowded cities comes with higher risks, and your experience could genuinely help other drivers stay alert, make better decisions, and avoid unnecessary trouble on the road.

Feel free to share anything you think other city drivers should know.đź’ˇ

Newsflash! Driving in the most densely populated city in the United States with 28,000 people per square mile can be tricky!

However, in a city of 8.8 million people, it also has the lowest car ownership in the USA, with less than half (45%) owning a car. For contrast, Los Angeles has 88% car ownership with 3.8 million people.

See, I can use data too!

Sadly, many accidents in and near big cities are due to a lack of driver attention. We recently were slammed in the rear by a 19 year-old girl who wasn't paying attention. She pushed us into the vehicle in front of us. The result: $28,000 in damage, just to our car. Years earlier, another young female driver slammed into us as we were behind stopped vehicles on the highway. Before that, a guy in a pickup at a large gas station thought he could safely exit the station by zig-zagging backward. He crashed into our front fender. His insurance, Allstate, decided that we were 10% liable because we didn't blast our horn to warn him. One year later the judge deemed the truck-driver to be 100% liable.

Thats soo sad to hear, Too many d!ckheads behind wheels
It seems as if many are young and inexperienced drivers. I recall being on a "Mountain Run" with quite a few sportscars, outside the city. One owner decided it was okay to let his 17 year-old son drive. He subsequently drifted into the oncoming lane and sideswiped a car. The teenager then over-corrected and slid down an embankment into a tree. His dad was injured but not seriously.

Please, tell us more about these young people that are so much more inferior to your worldly prowess.
