Hello fellas,

I’ve got an anniversary Supra a couple months back, absolutely love the car.

However, I want it to sound a bit better. Recently started looking at a few “entry-level” modifications - like the title suggests, I’m pretty clueless when it comes to that.

car is at 4k miles, still got warranty.

From what I found so far, many recommend replacing the down pipe, and possibly exhaust, but then there’s something about unlocking the ECU and tuning it, which I don’t understand very well.

I want to make the exhaust sound significantly better without voiding the warranty :/
would you have any recommendations, or if there’s already a post like this, could you link it?

For maintaining warranty, tuning is out of question. You have options for downpipe and exhaust. There are plenty of exhaust options out in the market. There should be a lot of Supra meets in the Texas area. See if you could go to one and hear the exhaust yourself as video does not give the true sound of the exhaust.

Your best bet is to look at comparison videos on Youtube and make a decision on your own.

bushido's link contains an excellent video comparison, but you will also want to check other videos to be sure.

If you want more power, you'll likely want to go for a downpipe, so you may want to look at downpipe + stock exhaust configurations before deciding if you want or need a full exhaust. Catless tends to add more rasp than catted.

If warranty is valuable to you, an aftermarket exhaust has a pretty close to 0 chance to void your motors warranty. Something's gotta go world ending levels of wrong for that to happen... At that point, just put the stock exhaust back on.

Downpipe is slightly more risky, but it's also possible to start throwing codes and CELs. It'll probably be a whole lot easier for a dealer to point and say "look dude, you messed with it". Plus, emissions. High flow downpipes that don't throw CELs do exists, but there's always a chance you might get a code, send it back, all that jazz.

On another note, you may be interested in an Air intake, there's nothing like hearing the air getting sucked into the motor. Similar risk level as downpipe; It's getting much easier to void warranty. Though, easy to revert back to stock if needed. Unlikely to throw a CEL.

Tuning will 100% void any warranty for the motor. You'll need to send the DME/ECU off to a company called Femtoevo to get it unlocked. There's plenty of threads describing the process, how to do it yourself, or how to have a vendor do it.

TL:DR Watch this and pick one out that you like -
I went with the HKS Hi Power (HKS 31014-KT001). It's plenty loud enough for me. If it could be a hair more quiet and if be happy.

Plenty of exhaust options out there.

Popular ones will be AWE Touring, HKS, Borla, Ark Performance. I would say those are our best sellers.

When it comes to tuning, does JB4 do the same thing? Tunes and voids the warranty?

In my experience working at a couple dealers, I've never seen a manufacturer cover an engine repair if the car had a tune on it as far as major or catastrophic failure. They just straight up deny coverage right away.

Start by getting the active autowerke downpipe.

It significantly increases the sound without making it obnoxious, which is very important, especially if you have never modded a car before.

if you want more, you can get an exhaust, but its best to do 1 step at a time
